Hi
Looks like big end bearings gone on our TD42. Can hear the piston hitting the block and then after removing sump found bits of filings in the oil.
Has anyone got a spare engine floating around that they want to sell??
Suspect head should still be ok therefore just short block would be sweet however anything considered.
Did consider just replacing bearings however think with a turbo bolted on the side and no idea of what other filings are floating around the system or other damage may be better to do the full swap.
Will be heading up to the Cambridge Trials this coming weekend so can pick up on the way there or back.
Cheers

Re: Safari Diesel Engine Required
Ouch talked to engine rebuilder and approx $6K assuming no major damage to rebuild.
Does this seem about right?
Can it be done on the cheap (i.e. pull apart and just replace what needs replacing as assume rebuilder must replace everything?)
2nd hand ones on trademe $1700 or wreckers around $2500 which seems expensive.

Both those seem about right. a fair chunk of the rebuild cost is machining and labour
Re: Safari Diesel Engine Required
Ok so looks like we have melted a piston so have tracked down a short block as the head on our one looks ok.
Finally got the 2 short blocks side by side and have noticed on the one we purchased that there are a few differences. One of the differences is the new one has a threaded hole on the passenger side (see picture below).

Does anyone know what this is for?
Our engine was out of a 1993 and the one we purchased has 97 written on the side so suspect that means it is out of a 97?
We also noticed that the old one has some more groves on top of the pistons (sorry didn't get a photo). Is this anything to worry about with bolting out head back on? We were thinking of getting the thickest head gasket to get around this?
Assuming it is out of a 1997 anything we should worry about? Our truck has an after market turbo bolted on if that effects anything?

Re: Safari Diesel Engine Required
Cheers we were thinking coolant drain as well.
Phoned wrecker we got the engine from and it turns out the hole is for the oil return feed from the turbo. Therefore the engine is out of a factory turbo safari.
Anyone see any issues with bolting a head off a non turbo safari onto a turbo safari? We are planning on using the thickest head gasket.

Yup to me it looks like the factory turbo oil drain as i just pulled a factory turbo motor out of my safari last monday as far as I'm aware the heads are the same as n/a but not 100% could get a pic if you wished but wont be till wednesday
