Mt Greenland late december

Post by Patroller »

Hi all,

Been a while since last post but still manage to get dirty once in a while.

Heading over to Hoki for a few nights camping on the 27th, and was planning
to have a crack at mt greenland while were there.

Went up a few years back on one of Als trips and it is a great track.

If anyone is over that way and wants to do some wheelin then it would be great to have some company, was thinking 28th or 29th of december but pretty flexible really as we will be on holiday :)

If the track is anything like last time then 33 tyres would probly be a minimum, but snorkel not reqd

flick us a text or post up ur keen

Cheers, Quesi

I'd be highly surprised if Al turned down that opportunity to do Mt Greenland  .

We'll be north of Westport from 6th Jan to maybe 8/9th then heading south to Hari Hari.

Ok al that sounds good, we are all looking foward to escaping from these damned quakes for a spell.

Were planning to stay at the doc camp just south of hokitika, the one opposite the pub  , so nice and close.

There till the 31st, so the best days for us would be either the 28th, 29th or 30th. cheers Quesi

Hi moo,

be good to have ya along

like al said, lockers will make all the difference

last time i did it i managed to get to the top with 1 tow, had a lwb patrol on pretty average 33s, open front, lsd rear. Still got the same truck, but with two new tyres on the back, and recently installed lockright in the front so looking foward to seeing how much of a difference it will make.

The 29th sounds good to me, how does that suit you and tim Al?

Keep us informed guys, we're taking the car to Hari Hari on Saturday but could be tempted to take the Nissan if you are heading up Mt Greenland later.

Longe range weather forcast looks BRILLIANT for west coast btw, starts improving late Friday and by Saturday through to Thursday etc it's all good.

great trip thanks Quesi had a chat to the guy who fixed the coon the next day and he was saying it used to be an old gold mine up there. Apparently that track heads down into the valley to what used to be a lodge which isnt there any more slip wiped it out or something. but yeah you can drive round for a bit in manuka etc and thats about it. reckoned years ago track used to be sweet as long as u had a winch for backup ay. So yeah might be worth a look next time

The trip down the other side isn't worth the grief. As you said it is full of bush and gorse and there is no where to go. We did it about 10 yrs ago.

I have been down the other side 3 times. You can't drive much past the building as it is a dead end into a creek and is reasonably steep.

The ramp is the hardest part because it is man made with broken rock so is no packed. With radials and low pressure it is not normally a problem. simex's and swampers tend to dig holes.

It is about 5 years since I have been there so it may have changed.

last time I went down the back was about 4 years ago. We had 5 trucks and everyone drove down to the hut and back without winching. There is one sharp ridge of rock on the ramp part but if you pack a few rocks around it thereis no problem. We had one guy ripped a tyre on it but if you had seen the state of his tyres you would be surprised that he got that far.
cheers Flag.

Me and a mate went down the oherside 15yr ago thinking it was a loop track. Young and keen back then. Couldn't get back up. Busted a hub, wrecked tryes. Locals helped me back up to the hut with tractors and then had to get a D4 out of Hoki. Learnt a whole heep out of that one. Nig

You must have gone right to the bottom on the other side to be stuck like that.

Mt Greenland has never been regarded as a stuff trip by clubs. I have been up there on Nelson, Blenheim and Canterbury Landrover club trips without too much problem with ordinary trucks.

Sometimes a bit of gardening is required on 1 corner for trucks without diff locks

the track has changed a huge amount in the last couple of years especially towards the top, I remember going up there about 7yrs ago with Robbie Abbercrombie and it being no fuss.
About a year or two ago I was there...... mother nature and lack of use were prevailling, we had plenty of gardening to do and I hear not many clubs venture up there these days :P
you could expect this sort of work after heavy rain

Yes Bulletbroof we went down as far as we could. I had only been into 4WDing for a short time and didn't belong to a club. Had a suzuki 410 with me and me in a pretty stock standard LN65 on 31's.Stayed in the old hut for a night. Went for a wee walk the next day and found another mate looking for us, apporached Britchfield who put me in contact with a couple of locals with tractors. The old ford tractor backed down past the hut with two of us standing on the counter weight at the front. It managed to pull me up past the hut but dug in on the man made rock ramp. Ended up getting an older D4 out of Hoki in the end. Had to get premission from DOC for it to come get me up to the top. Once up drove out in two wheel drive as had a busted front hub. A lot has changed since then. Learnt a lot and there would be a few guys like yourself out there to help out if required. Cheers Nig
