Suzuki autos any good?

Post by tow99 »

Hey guys
Have recently started the search for a little escudo/vitara to start playing in. The problem im faced with is there seems to be alot of automatic trucks for sale and all the manual ones have been flogged or are out of my region( wgtn) or pricerange or both.
So the question is are the autos in these suzukis any good for offroading?
Ideally i will be trying to find a lwb escudo or vitara 1.6 injected withpower steering. Any help would be great thanks

yeah, i have had my auto escudo for 2.5 years now, i would def go for one with overdrive, they rev lower on motorway. i am really glad i learnt to offroad in a manual, but i do enjoy how easy it is to drive an auto offroad, but i miss the engine breaking of a manual. i serviced the transmission as soon as i got it, and i run an additive in the trans. Lubegard Transmission Fluid Additive (red bottle) ATF protectant - BNT used to sell it.

cheers for the reply.
ive done a little bit of 4wding in both manuals and autos and the auto definately makes it easier not having to constantly use a clutch.my mrs also wants to do some driving so i think the auto might be the way to go.
think i may just have to go and test drive both and make a decision.
is there a model without overdrive?thought that would have been standard.
ive never been too keen on using additives in anything if you use a good quality oil from a good brand no additive should be needed.only ever tried the moreys oil stabilizer in my surf with abit of a sloppy auto it made it better but felt like it justmade it sugglier to shift.

We don't seem to get a lot of guys complaining about the auto boxes on vitaras, so they must be reasonably good.

I've got no personal experience with a auto vitara, but have been for a ride in one and it seemed like the auto box dealt better with the larger tires than my manual one did.

The manual gearboxes are well known to get noisy anyway, so I reckon if you can buy a auto one off a old lady who has used it as a shopping cart for the last 10 years, do a service and it will be mint.

Yeh mate i guess i just have to be patient. The diff ratios will obviously be differet between the autos and the manuals? So fitting manul diffs to aauto equiped truck wil result it lower overall gearing?

Hi, 1.6 auto 5-door diff R&P are a common swap into 413s and Samurais as they are nice and low, so you'll probably already have the lowest (cheap) ratio available - Samurais come with 3.73, 3.9 or 4.1 - Escudos 3 door auto 4.62, Manual 5.1, all sports models are 5.1, Auto Overdrive 5 doors come with 5.13:1 hope that helps, Terry

Hey man, I've got a V6 with a 4 speed auto and have had no problems with the box so far. One little quirk mine has is that in low ratio it locks out 4th gear (overdrive) so my top speed is around 50km/h. I suspect this is done to protect overdrive.

I like auto's because hill starts are easier and you don't get water in the clutch but you do lack the ability to rev the engine and drop the clutch if you need more power.

Standard mine came with 4.83 diff ratios but I've since changed to 5.13 which almost make it standard with 31' tyres.

I would recommend buying the lighter 3 door or go for a V6 if you want a 4 door model. Look out for the timing chain problem if you V6.

Are the v6's good? 2l for a v6 seems like a waste of time. The 1.6 looks nice and simple to work on. Im after a lwb so it can be abit more of a multi purpose vehicle as the swbs are pretty small once some gear is thrown in too.

I have a 2.5 v6 and it has much better torque than a 1600 but beware of the 2.0 v6 as they can have timing chain issues.
