60 Series disc conversion

Post by Disco Gofer »

Bought some 60 series front disc diffs and drum rears to fit to my FJ40 bush truck. Unfortunately the calipers were badley rusted so im after a pair of "what ever fits" calipers for the 60 series disc? I am also after the bits to fit rear discs as well if any one can educate me please. I have stripped the diffs downs, fitted a full bearing and seal kit to the front and stripped the rear drums off completely to make way for discs. I head Pajero rear dics fit on the rear of mine? Is this right? And where/ who has calipers for me? Any help will be greatly appriciated. Been driving this Green machine for 8 months with nooo brakes and the 350 Chevy is so hard to hold back................keep using the trees and bushes to stop in a hurry.

watch what front callipers you get coz although they'll bolt on soild rotor callipers are a bit narrower and wont fit over a vented disc, cant remember the rotor thicknesses but I think solids are about 20mm and vented are 25mm?

I've been told the Paj stuff fits pretty easy, Iwas at pick a part yesterday and there was one up there with all the rear brakes on it? I stuck subaru callipers on both my trucks, the callipers are only $13 each from pickapart and they work well but are getting a bit older and harder to find now, Brian Howatt has the brackets for them, you have to do a bit of machining to get the hub to fit inside the rotors, the handbrakes come up well

Use 60 or 70series vented rotors(buy new ones they're cheap from bnt etc) an ln130 surf calipers. Theyve got big equal sized pistons rather than 2 big an 2 small pistons. If your looking for pads an seal kits go to Toyota they're surprisingly cheap.
For the rear if you've got a transfer park brake use the solid discs an calipers an make some brackets for them, that's what I did on my 40 anyway have a search for mustard whale fj40

If your axle's are semi-floating, you'll be best to fit calipers that are floating on rails, if you fit non-rail type then you'll need to take out all of the axle end float.

this is a rear disc conversion using subaru callipers, mine is using the 2 subaru handbrake cables joined up to the cruiser handbrake cable using the subaru equaliser setup, I think it was only 1982 and later FJ40s that had the handbrake on the rear drums so chances are you'll still have the carden setup on the back of the gearbox, both my cruisers are using the subaru callipers and they both have shithot handbrakes better than any other vehicle I've owned :D the callipers have the same fluid displacement as the old drum brakes so you dont have to muck around with different master cylinders or proportioning valves

my 70 series didnt quite get full pad contact on the rotor (missed out by 2-3mm) but they usually accept you filing the edge back off the pads if your going for certification, my 40 series just got full pad contact on the rotor
