How Stable 3.1D SWB
I am looking at buying a 1993 Turbo Intercooled diesel (3 door) and wonder how stable they are. I have had a 1991 ZX Toyota Land Cruizer and felt really unstable on sidelings + too big. Tried a 3.1 MU and loved it, but under powered. Currently have Pajero 3.5 V6 SWB Auto - love it but fuel an issue now along with bad 1st low. Any owners willing to fess up
. Looking at one with 35" tires and 240000km on the odo ,oh and recaro seats .... comfy ?

Re: How Stable 3.1D SWB
By 3.1 Think he means Big Horn

Re: How Stable 3.1D SWB
If you are talking about a bighorn they have the same motors as the MU's..
If your saying the 3.1 was under powered in a MU then a bighorn with 35s isnt going to be the powerhouse your expecting.
I have a 2.8td MU at the moment and I find it quite nicely powered, especially for being a standard motor just with exhaust, and there not the lightest vehicles.
What sort of use are you planning with the new vehicle? There may be some better options if your wanting power, stability etc
Cheers

Re: How Stable 3.1D SWB
My friend has a Mu with 35's and that is not under powered manages to spin them with out any trouble, I also have a 3.1 Mu aswell and it has heaps of grunt and that's with 33's.
You say it is under powered, there are a few house keeping procedures you need to do to get the most from the 3.1 engine.
As for stabilty, as long you dont go on a steep angle you will be fine, they handle well on the road.
Cheers

Re: How Stable 3.1D SWB
Thanks guys, yes it is the 3.1d Bighorn 3 door, I took a fully reconditioned 3.1d Mu for a drive yesterday and it struggled to get past 110km , tried to pass someone, was most surprised. The last MU I had the pleasure to drive had an inter-cooler + bigger exhaust + boost to 14psi. Standard hmmmm. But I am after a 3 door bighorn ,which I have found one, but apparently it is leaking oil from behind the Turbo. Not too sure if I should touch. Haven't seen it though as it is in Wanganui and I'm in Gisborne. He wants 4600 for it

House keeping ? Bigger exhaust, wind boost up ?
would you recommend a MU or a Bighorn 3.1D ?

Club runs , semi hard . Need something more economical than my 3.5 V6 , although it goes anywhere

What about a terrano? Have seen a few with not a huge amount of mods that go almost everywhere.
Otherwise what about a zuk or something? Easy to get them to go places.

terranos have a really weak front end you will snap cvs specaily with bigger tyres and bend tie rods and idler arms.
bighorn or mu is a much of a muchness same running gear diff bodies.
if the turbo is leaking replace it, get a 2.8 turbo and get it modded, my turbo is modded and it has intercooler and exhaust runs 15 psi and has plenty of power.

Hi mytronic,
Yes to all the above, that is what I meant by house keeping.
Yeah does not matter engine wise as a Mu 3.1 and a Bighorn 3.1 is the same inrespects, but I would go for the Bighorn only reason for that is the front has bigger C.V's than a Mu.
Iam running 18 PSI and it hauls arse.
Cheers.

Re: How Stable 3.1D SWB
Thanks guys, seems the Bighorn may be the go. Although took a 1991 Toyota Prado LWB 3ltr Turbo for a drive today and now I am in two minds , beam axles all round. The Bighorn is SWB and suspect more fun to drive and play with.
