G16A or G16B How do I tell? manual hubs & headers

Post by aimless »

Still on the hunt for the right wagon. How do I tell if the engine is a 16A or 16B by looking at a picture of it and is there much difference performance wise between the two?

Also, wheres the best place to buy a new set of Aisin manual hubs and also whats your opinions on the best type of headers for a 16 valve and where do I get them?

I would go for coby extractors. You can buy them on trade me.

Otherwise I am not much help.

I got a set of Aisin hubs from mudbits, they were expensive ($250 ish)and not in great condition, so if I were to do it all again I would probably pay a bit more and get a set of new manual hubs from 4wdbits.co.nz I think they sell the superwinch ones.

a and b blocks are almost identical (just in the casting I believe) I believe. The only thing you can tell by a picture is the typoe of head (16V have "16 Valve" on the alloy tappet cover and the plug leads have long rigid stalks / the 8V has a blank rounded tin cover and the plugs are visible in the side of the head.

The 16v head has different shaped ports I believe (so you cant use 8v stuff on them - but 8v stuff will work on the g13a and vice versa).

Front cover on the 16V has 16V printed on it and is wider then the 8v cover (16V belt is wider - so are the pulleys). Spacing for mounts on the 8 and 16 are different too (so be wary if swapping bits from one to another - they need a little attention...)

block codes are stamped on the rear of the block on the lip that mates with the bell housing. Exhaust side i think.

G16a is not an 8v version , both the 8v and 16v are g16a . I am not sure if they went to g16b around 94 when they changed the intake manifold or late 90's when it went to a distributorless engine . At a guess its when they went distributorless as they have a crank position sensor in them .

I thought G16a was dissy then G16b when went to injection?? If correct then looking for a dissy will tell you which one it is.

This is the only easy and reliable way to tell for sure. The belief that 16Vs are all G16Bs is totally incorrect. Most 16Vs are still G16As.

I believe Rotazuk is correct about the distributorless ignition being a feature that was introduced with the G16B, but I can't be 100% certain.

so just to be clear, a G16a head uses a distributor, and a G16b uses a sensor?? So a 16a head can't be replaced with a 16b due to the ECU?

I found this out the hard way when trying to locate a replacement rocker cover gasket for my '94 16v took it home and it was wrong, the guy at Supershit said it was the only gasket listed for both G16A and B engines....a trip to Repco solved the issue.

you are right about being distributorless in the g16b. Also the wasiest way to tell is that the oil filler is at the front of the rocker cover on the g16b and at the back on the g16a. learnt that one from Bob on his g16b winch truck samurai

heaps of incorrect info in this thread time to set the record straight
G16A - come in 8V and 16V config, with dizzy and without, was fitted to JAPANESE market vehicles. (was also what 8V carbed motors were stamped as when fitted to NZ new vitara's

G16B is the designation given to OVERSEAS Market motor, weather is be for australisia, europe or america markets. Comes in dizzy and dizzyless configs.

then comes a G16AID - bet you's didn't know that...... only comes dizzy less, and is found in the 2005+ APV Van. G16AID means G16A InDoneasian assembled.

There is differences in the 16V head as they went thru the years, there is 5 different types of rockers in them, there is heaps of different types of rocker covers. there is 5 or 6 different inlet manifolds on G16A/B dizzy type
