A quick Landrover question for anyone!!

Does anyone know how to tell the difference between a early 18 ACR alternator and the 25 ACR?

Mudhog has it's original alternator and I have one that is larger in size off a parts truck I have and was wondering if it would work better to charge my batteries. The connections are different to the alternator and was wondering which wires would go were?

The larger one has one large spade connection with a smaller spade connection above and below it.

My alternator on Mudhog now has two large spade connections and one smaller one.

I have the plug from the later model alternator and the large alternator looks like it will fit on the old mounting bracket on Mudhog.

Just not that sure of the wiring, does anyone have any ideas?

From what I have found out about the larger alternator, it should be either 60-amp or 65-amp if it is a 25ACR alternator with the old one I have being a 40-amp.

Best bet would be to find wiring diagrams for both types of alternators, and trace where the wires go. That way you can change connections around, and know what each wire is for.

Also, do you have a way of knowing what the colour of the wires that connected to your spare alternator were? If the colours match up to the current one, it could help with changing connections.

if its externaly regulated you probably need the regulator for the bigger alternator

I think they're internally regulated?

If so, it'd make life a tad easier

I think they have an internally regulator.

The wires are the same colour, just the one on the hog now has two wires that are about 6mm and the larger one has one 8mm wire with two smaller wires. I was looking at feeding the battery directly from the alternator if possible

if you can work out which wire is which that makes it a pretty easy swap then

I can tell you that the two large terminals on the alternator you are using now are common (linked internally). On my defender the two 6mm cables are also common at the other end and go to the same stud on the starter motor (batt positive).

I believe old pommy rubish they should be lucas internaly regulated alt. on the replacement alt with two wires one usualy the bigger one goes to batt positive or starter positive( same thing) and the small one too activate alternater carrys positive power via the light on the dash to alt to activate the alt when you turn the key on... so possitve power goes in the light bulb and out to alt so when key is turned on the earth inside alt makes the bulb glow but when the engine starts alt spins gets the power from bulb activates the alt the earth in alt for bulb becomes a positive and light goes out. very basic. but pathetic output from those alts. very easy too adapt to old tractors and things, my experience with them.

Been at Woodhill on Safety Patrol and did two winches. First one was winching me up a steepish wet muddy hill and the second one was a LWB Safari that was stuck on it's diff's in the play area beside the car park.

Winch and batteries worked great and the motor stayed cool

I really think I need to do something about the 40-amp Alternator as it will end up shitting it's self

If you could check deranged ones that would be cool.

sorry didnt look today so have to be monday. honestly tho there very small output and its even less when not reving so why not fix it properly by converting to a higher output alt. v6 commy for example are 80 amp have the same 2 wire setup and a simple bolt up pattern and cheap

I'm going to talk to the local guy's that have been very helpful when I had a few parts over from rebuilding my starter motor

Iv got the disco alt. Wiring as described but one wire is the feed to the factory tacho.
