so, i pulled the manifold and cleaned it. it was filthy as f$%^, and got it looking clean again. got template to make EGR blanking, which will be done later next week. everything is back on the car and i am driving it atm.

Personally i would go for a front mount air to air. they work best for 4WDs i found. water to air have heat spikes and take up alot more room ( radiator pipes, radiator etc) and harder to set up to work efficiently. they cost a hell of a lot more. an air to air is your best bet for performance. just as long as you front mount cause top mounts dont work. and i know they dont work. i front mounted an air to air I/C on my l200 and wont go back, infact im looking at a bigger one. i have photos of my plumbing if you want to. just say so and i will post them

IMHO it depends on what your going to do with it ,If its primary to drive up an down the motorways and road work then go for a front mount but if your going to use it off road a bit then go water to air top mount ,front mount rely on air flow to work properly and wont work right when full of mud and crawling around off road
.where as a w/air will ,as for them not working ,sorry but I would like to see some evidence to back up that statement
.i have been running a top mount water to air on my Saf for years ,running 26lb boost ,mod pump etc with no problems /(mind you it usually only gets driven on Sundays)

meann lol! so correct me if i am wrong, but to put a front mount on a terrano will involve me removing the air conditioning unit wouldnt i? as i cant really see how else i can fit it. and simon bo, did u cut out the hole to put the scoop ureself or did u get a workshop to get it cut??

Top mounting will mean u can keep ur ac if u think it will get in the way. Another down side with front mount is when crawling the radiator will be getting restricted flow and thats last thing u want is to overheat.
If ur vechical is road use only then front mount if u can still keep ac

Simple; If manufacturers who spend mega money designing vehicles use them (diesel and high performance petrol) then they must be ok,
And furthermore, who (with any performance orientation) is going to say that no intercooler is better than none?
Remember (if you knew), that intercoolers work as heat sinks, absorbing heat from boosted air, then shedding it to atmosphere AND into intake air.
The main difference between diesel and petrol fitments is that diesels are 'on boost' for much longer periods, meaning the intercooler can heatsoak easier, then it just relies on what it can shed heatwise into atmosphere...
Obviously then, the more cool air the core can be around the better, but weather this means front-mounted, well ducted/ fan blown or a very large cooler will depend on package solutions.
And most of it comes down to individual requirements;
lots of slow speed high load use?
highway low load?
room to mount cooler?
cost of core/plumbing?
likelyhood of mud fouling/ stone damage?

What you can't see from the top

With the fan on, you call feel the suction from 3 inches in front of the scoop.
Works good on road and mint off road
1 days work and the whole lot was done. No real big effort to fit a top mount to the same engine type as the one it came off

i have never had my front mount fouled with mud and ive had my mates on dirt bikes thinking its fun roosting mud straight at the front of my truck. infact i found more mud in my snorkel and down my bonnet scoop. (i have a bonnet scoop cause it looks cool and helps keep the engine bay temps down in the summer) Also if your truck has a viscious clutch fan (i think teranos do)

well i am not planning to sink it in mud anytime soon, this is my daily driver and my cross country tourer, it doesnt sit in traffic much, but gets driven on the motorway on a daily basis. i would remove the A/C n go FMI, but the missus insists that i keep it, so my options off the bat have been limited to top mount or water to air. Given my circumstances at this very moment, i would be stoked to go top mount, as the whole set up seems cheaper, i jz gotta arrange some time with someone who can help me cut my bonnet and a few pointers on the install. Box of beers/woodys and smokes await he/she who is willing to help me install my intercooler! XD i live in greenlane, but i can drive anywhere really! i know its disgraceful that i cant do it on my own, but i have never installed an intercooler, or cut into any sort of car part, so yea....

hahaha keen on driving up to kaitaia 3 hrs away? i would do it for free but i doubt you'd wana drive all that way. but at least you be able to test it properly.

First off you will need the parts.
Bighorn bonnet scoop with bellows. Mistral 96+ inter-cooler and maybe the intake manifold as well.
When i made the adaptor flanges, I had access to a lathe and welding gear.
As I don't anymore tasks like this are harder for me to do.
Can still cut holes in the bonnet though
Measure twice, cut once

I have access to welder, grinder, intercooler pipeing if any needed. bolts and nuts, and tools (spanners, sockets, torque wrench, air compresser etc)

Kaitaia, i havent went up there in awhile! its a great offer bo, but right now i dont think i can afford it to drive up there
...
but i will contact you when i do come up, and will have an intercooler on it (most likey!)! But for the time being, time to procure parts!! an intercooler, some piping, scoop, and a mistral manifold! XD parts will be dirt cheap, or least the ones i am goin to be getting, will post the pics of it soon, and will PM Simonbro for help!

Also mate, make sure that your pipe joiners, (the rubber/silicone parts) has reinforcing stitching in it cause it will burst open as i learnt today and then i had to crawl home.

i have to admit sibainmud that that is a very tidy install mate. i am now in the process of changing my front mount to a pajero 2.8 i/c. it is slightly bigger and better condition than my one i have now. also the fan that came off my new i/c actually goes hard. took some skin of my fingers as i thought it wasnt that powerful.
so a top mount does actually work IF you have a fan with a shroud or something.
. i stilll like my front mount tho, but one to his own. lol

Sweet I have managed to install a RB20 stock intercooler, and i have also used the front light sprayers( one of it ) to make an intercooler sprayer

I have my inter-cooler under the bonnet like that. Im not going to leave it like that as its getting to much heat soak for my liking

oh and i highly recommend the mount shop in penrose, top blokes they are i tell you! i turned up there on thursday, at round 4ish, just before they close up for easter, and the man didnt care much bout the holiday coming, bt stood out with my bonnet open picking and discussing different fittings and clamps, took us an hour to sort the details, and the parts weren't to expensive either! And they sell bushings too apparently, as i have a worn caster arm bush and got one from em, its rubber according to em, havent fitted it yet ,will do soon.
But yes, Mount Shop is great! Cheers to coxsy for mentioning it!
