Tyre size change.wofs,Certs and insurance

Post by Vitara2l »

Hi all,
I recall reading that any tyre that is more than 5% larger in diameter than the std tyre size (as per vehicle tag inside drivers door) need to be certified??. I find this very interesting as my previous 2 trucks both had larger tyres well in excess of 5% yet this was never an issue at WOF time (various different wof issuers) :o . This got me thinking as I am currently looking at changing tyres on my new truck and wondrered that if involved in an accident who would be liable if it had a current wof with bigger tyres and given how good insurance companys are at getting out of paying would they cover?

If I was to have certified whats involved? Interested in others thoughts, advice and comments....Cheers :D

hey mate, yes a lot of people do put larger tyres and get away with it if done in proportion to vehicle.and plenty of wof shops let it through etc etc.when coming to a crash though yes it can be a big out for insurance companies as the vehicle is illegally modified as anything over 5% should be certified to say brakes are still operational within specs and the speedo has been corrected so you don't speed

as for what's involved in certs.if only tyres then pretty easy.take truck to cert shop.certifier will go over truck, take for test drive, then send away paper work.bout 2weeks later certifier will call you,you return and he puts tag on truck and you're done,oh he'll also take about $500 off you

um not always that easy you've still got to get the truck to pass the brake test with oversized tyres and its often not that easy to get through with bigger tyres :x

this can be true, but when saying just tyres i can only assume such as a 33 instead of a 31 maybe, any more than that ie 35+ and you'd be doing lift or guard chop aswell etc
