Re: thompsons track
It looks like the slip might have fallen onto the track, which is better than the track itself slipping. It may well mean a lengthy closure however to allow the material to stabilise a bit before any machinery goes in.... if the Council can afford to do that work. Bugger!
Re: thompsons track
Bummer alright, that was a nice track to do, all the tracks dissapearing due to nature.
Like Peter said wait until it has settled and the weather is nice before it is cleared away.

Re: thompsons track
While it may be a case of having to wait a while, it seems that the Council will address the slip. They'd not yet been able to do their routine annual maintenance because of the 'summer' weather, so it is still to be done.
It will also be necessary, as the pines alongside the road are to be logged this summer. To accomplish that, the Council advise that there will be days in February when Thompsons Track will be closed to allow logging machinery to work.

As i understand it the council can do a temporary road closure and put any type of machinery up there that they like

Re: thompsons track
so it a public road so non reg trucks and bikes we can tell them to piss off,

All vehicles on Thompsons track need to be fully road legal (and pay road user charges) except when it is closed. in which case any authorized vehicle, road legal or not can use it, if authorized by the road controlling authority. no different to the motorway.

Its to good a track to loose .
I agree
Re: thompsons track
15 blokes went up there Sunday and cleared nigh on half of it by hand. The digger/dozer is due to head up there within the next 2 weeks.

Do you have the authority to tell people to piss off?

Dont quite understand what your trying to say?
Half the vechicles that use the track wouldnt be road legal?

Re: thompsons track
The fact is that all vehicles using Thompsons Track should be road legal and risk being pinged by the Police if they don't comply. If we are going to insist that unformed legal roads should be available as 'roads' for 4x4 use, then we also need to recognise that road rules still apply.
Re: thompsons track
So dont have a loss of traction either or you risk being convicted under "boy racer" legislation ..... yeah right, good one.

Re: thompsons track
guys lets not look at whether thomos is a road or what ever, we dont need any coppers going for a wonder due to conversations on a web site (know what i mean)
lets just quitely encourage those in the know council wise to quitely contract a digger to wonder up there and clear the slip
quitely quitely softly softly
so we can get back up there

Quite correct. Well said. And as I earlier posted, a digger is already sorted to have a crack at fixing it.

Thats probably not far from the truth. All I am saying is that Thompsons is a road, and all vehicles using it should be road legal. in theory, if you are parked on the track, a parking warden could give you a ticket for no rego. is it likely to happen? I would say highly unlikely.
in regards to fines for loss of traction, the offense is deliberate loss of traction, I would have thought to prove that offense by a 4x4 on thompsons track would be very difficult. Most of the vehicles would be doing all they could to maintain traction, otherwise they would be in 2wd and on road tires.

Seeing as Maratoto is being closed for repairs would it be an Idea that Thompsons track to have a donation box like Martoto/ Stadia, or some kind of online donation??
Just a sugguestion.

Suggested it years ago. Responses were along the lines that seeing as how the track had to have access maintained anyway to get to the survey peg at the crossroads (the same peg that was mounted on the concrete block, the same block that was AWOL last time I was up there) and hence the matamata-piako ratepayers were paying for it anyway, why do we need to dontate anything. [paraphrasing]
I dropped the matter then. Personally I think that even if we werent to pay, we could sort some more clean up days up there, last one I recall was 3 odd years back that the Cozzie 4 wheelers did. Not necessarily all 4x4ers rubbish that gets left behind, but Ive picked up bourbon and beer bottles following other groups before. Shits me.
Good luck on the suggestion, im for it. Either donation box at the council office in TeAroha, or via internet would be the go, wouldnt leave a box. Might not get as many donating via office box or internet, but better than getting box at gate nicked.

Any news on when the work will be carried out? Could be interested in lending a hand if given the chance.
