Macetown - 27 Dec 11

Post by Dirty4WD »

Doing a nice easy run into Macetown 27 Dec if anyone else happens to be considering that also. I have only done the trip with Nomad tours about 4 years ago and it seems fairly easy but a bit of company is always nice.

Hopefully I can find the tunnel and take a look at that also, seen pics of it and that is something we did not do with the Nomad trip.

Staying at Wanaka so probably be about 10.30 by the time we get to Arrowtown.

Will be there with a Green Discovery 1, winch, mt's, dents etc.

As you head in after about the 10th crossing you start to climb. You leave the river and climb high above it. After about 800m? of climbing there is a track of to the left that drops quite sharply down, just by a big vent vertical pipe. Get to the bottom of the hill then turn right. Watch the 3rd crossing down that hill if you don't have a snorkel or take it slowly.

Water no longer flows through it, it was a great swimming hole when growing up but dry now.

If you go to the visitor centre at the museum in Arrowtown you should be able to buy a guide of the Macetown Track...this will tell you what your looking at & where to find it .

Scoles Tunnel is about 2.7 km from Buckingham st ...there is a small track off to the left that leads to the tunnel.
Entire track from Buckingham St to the end at Andersons battery is about 13.8 km long ..so wont take too long .

You can drive to the tunnel, well you could a few months ago, camping there is good if youcan handle the sandflies!

Yes, Scoles Tunnel, the pic wjw posted. Can't picture me crawling through any tunnels. I have seen several other photos of the tunnel, but did not go there last time as it was an organised trip by Nomad Tours.

I have the little Macetown booklet from the Museum they mailed it to me. Very detailed, a great resource.

Yes, I remember the hungry sand flies, almost as hungry as their West Coast cousins.
