Let my fingers do the walking and got prices and what a price variation out there.

Standard 85amp alternator. all including gst.
$240 for a second hand.
$285 to recondition it to one I have
$780 New one, repco
$306 New one Super cheap auto,

I brought a new police commodore one (120amp) for $363 incl from super cheap auto after my auto sparky quoted me $285 to recondition it my old one, ($306 for a brand spanker at super cheap.)

It's nice to know my money is going into improvements, more amp's

Looks like I will 4x4ing this weekend and hopefully my new ECU I have on back order will arrive. 20% more power

I have not got my alternator yet just ordered it, fingers crossed it will be here tomorrow.

keep an eye on your main batt wire between the alt and batt incase it starts getting a bit hot and melting with the extra current going through it

True, so true, been there done that. I have a 110amp on my Zook and the 1600 alt/bat wire only lasted 30 seconds when winching

Thats a good point. come to think Of it i was surprised how thin the wire was when removing the alternator only about 5mm thick. 30 sec to burn out is not long and not the sort of issue you want in the bush.. Will need to sources a desent wire to the battery. If you know the best place to get desent wiring let me know. I'm thinking car stereo equient.

When you work it out Going from 85amps - 120amps is a 41% gain in amps. And with a brand spanker new alternator my volts should be up in the 14s to. It will be interesting to see.

I stumbled acros the 120amp police alternator on the just commadore forum. I also find the super cheap in upper hut has a great manger who knows his stuff. He is into drag racing or something.
Il find out if they do a 120am for the v6 tomorow and ill get a price for you.

At those prices it is worth upgrading. you should get good money for a working alternator on trademe.

I asked super cheap if it works on a v6, I got a blank look, there is a v6 100amp that can bolt in it around $550, I have the part number and exact price at home let me know if you are keen I will send it to you.

I have read on the net somewhere the 120amp can work but needs about 5mm cut off to fit in bracket (alloy easy to cut). again let me know if you want the part number?

The one I purchased is a bit different to the original alternator as far as wiring goes. I ended up getting my local auto sparky to wire it up (don't want to fry it). something to do with the sender voltage light and amount of current. he is putting a relay into the circuit or something.

There is a little info on it here. (bottom pic) maybe check out the just commodore forum you should find something.

another alternative is to take your alt up to pick a part and find something close that'll fit with a wee bit of chopping and filing, you can sometimes find quite reasonable output alternators and they only charge about 34 bucks or something like that for them
