Not really a trip worthy of a write up but thought a few may be interested to know the state of the track.

Well we ended up heading away for the day by ourselves so it became a quiet family trip. We left late and headed up to the Gowan turnoff and headed into Lake Rotoroa for an early lunch and the kids had a quick swim in the lake.
Just as we were about to start up the Porika a middle aged Dutch couple in a rental Hyundai pulled up and asked if we knew the Porika track and if their rental was suitable to take over, they were a bit disappointed when we explained their car wasn't up to it.
By the looks of things there had been three reasonable slips on the Rotoroa side of the hill.

Now looks like

Drove to the top of the pylon track for a look around and then headed out to the Howard Valley, stopping off at Sabines Memorial, where the kids reckoned we should go back and camp for the night. (Why not).
Then out to St. Arnaud for compulsory icecreams, then home.
A nice day out with the family.
Was my boys (15mth) first trip offroad and he laughed all the way, the bigger the bumps the better. Awesome.

Heading up

Email the visitors centre to confirm if its open.
nelsonlakesvc@doc.govt.nz

I don't imagine it'll be shut, hasn't been wet enough to do any damage.
We may be keen to tag along, what is your plan?

Plan on meeting in brightwater at midday, then head away just after then.
Bit of late start, but have to wait for a mate to finish work first
