safari auto hubs/cv joint rattle????

Post by paorabear »

have a 91 safari LWB that has developed a very noisy clutter/rattle that appears to come from the front hub. I use my truck to tow my boat.... and last week it developed after o was backing my boat in, and pullin my boat out of the ramp in 4wd.. initally thought i had stones jammed in the wheel assy. now its obvious its internal. curious if the a common fault with Auto hubs????(have read on here). It goes away with a clunk, when i slow down, just about to stop and it seems the shaft slips back in or something... is this from my auto hubs failing? is it a simple fix with the purchase of free wheeling hubs? and obvious installation.?
oh it happens whilst normal driving in 2wd on the road. If its just a matter of auto hub replacement, any1 recomend where/who to get a set off plse...

Yes it is a sign your Autohub is on it's way out or is already, I dont know much about Safari's but it should be simple to replace with manual ones.

But Iam sure some one will correct me.

Cheers.

Yea itll be your auto hubs making that noise, I would be replacing them.
Toyota Landcruiser FJ40, front and rear lockers, 35" simex.
Toyota FJ45 build in progress.
Tires are like boobs, they always look big until you have played with them for a while, then you just want a bigger set.

Do a search on here or Pirate. Just a case of removing the auto locking ring in the hub and you then have manual hubs or spend $300 on manual hubs...............

To those that offered contructive guidence - thanks.
Just a bump for Dave from 4x4 essentials in Rotorua - a good bugger that bent over backwards with parts, advice and some tools that made the Hub repair an easy one. I'll be back Dave!!!! kp good health mate and rest a little.
