Excuse my ignorance, but could one of you gurus educate me here? I can't see what the point of having the wheel on the ground is if there is no weight (from the spring) on it. Apart from looking bad ass that is .

There is weight on the dropped wheel from the compressed wheel pushing up, pushes it down. With a beam axle anyways. Wheels on the ground = traction
yeah just a bit. But tom reckons i won't loose too much travel if we have to clamp both ends. The springs will stretch out. They will have to be some big clamps though as they are some stiff springs. Tom is going to have a look when he drops off my new tierod.

Thats a bit shit, had me thinking, dont ladas and some european 4x4s just have a cone in the rear that stops the spring falling out from the top with a clamp on the bottom.??

My Lada (and the Fiva too) have the cone at the top, and nothing at the bottom to keep them in place...

haha those are some seriously stretched springs. how long did they last? Here are some photos for the pic whores of Tom's good work. Been into Wayne today and limiting straps onroad is a no no so i am stuck with trying to captivate them still. They only need to be captivated for about 100mm of travel. I will have to see what can be done and then talk to tom about making some form of clamp. I will also have to see what they are like with swaybars on.
Anyways the photos. The front shot also shows the steering dampner. I will have to see how long it lasts but there is not really anywhere else to put it.
no to limiting straps sounds fairly lame. there's hundreds of trucks/heavy trailers kicking around with fabric limiting straps from new. they don't give any issues, rather, prevent them (stops shocks pulling eyes off, bags ripping etc)
i don't know why it does that i can't figure out how to make them bigger . maybe i need to use photobucket and not postimage.
Um the joints are sweet on road. body roll is still there but its manageable. its the offroad stuff where it come into its own. just need to keep them clean and greased and they will last.
You should still be able to use relocation cones on the LR Pete.... All you are doing is bolting the cone in place. The old man has them in his 90 and then just some longer (I think 80 series) shocks or lower the top shock mount - once again bolt on and then when driving - the springs pop out but clang their way back in.
What about using some kinda dropout setup? seen them on some ozzy 4wds in magazines and i think jafas jalopy has them in the back? just have them locked in with a pin onroad spring is captive as such bolted to spring seat with a rod and sleave that slides up and down
Well a bit of an update. I finally got a new tierod that Tom and Nibs made up for me. It is a very nice piece of kit. Flex'd the truck up again and she goes a bit further up the ramp but i am having big issues still with the front coils coming loose. With the stiffness of the spring i have in the front i think i will be hard pressed to come up with a way to captivate both the top and the bottom due to the shock running through the middle soooo next year it is going up to Tom for him to cut weld and bash some 14" travel coil overs into the front. Hopefully then i will be on my way to having a true weapon.

Dude, the Weapon rolls on LEAF SPRINGS, coil overs are for girls

Well another update. I have got some new tyres. I got some 35 BFG KM2's on 15x10 rims. They only had less than 2000km on them and are in awesome shape. I had to try flexing it up to check rubbing and it rubs on the rear mudguard but that will be removed soon and a new one built so it won't be a problem. Here are the photos
Well another update. I picked up some 14 inch Travel Bilstein coilovers today to go into the front of my truck. This should stop any issue of springs coming loose under articulation and will keep the cert man happy. They were built up by autolign as they are not originally designed as a coilover but have been built as coilovers with no issue. They are very cool looking things that are about 880mm fully extended. It will be going up to Tom tomorrow so he can work his magic to make them fit nicely. Here are some of the picks of them. They aren't fully assembled yet.
Updates will be posted soon. I should be picking it up friday night,
Gday Mate. sweet surf. i got a similiar set up on mine. Red kzn130 with Prado front end, 3 link rear, body and suspension lift, custom tube bar, etc etc. I just wanting to know what height 80 series springs are in the back and the part number for the ranchos you were looking at to go with them and what height prado springs you had in the front and the shock length you were running? lots of questions but hoping you can help me out. cheers Jeremy
Hey mate sorry about the slow reply. It depends on the lift you want to get out of the back of yours. Mine has about a 6-7inch suspension lift and i used a lifted 80series coil. The part number for it was c59-189 (i am also using 20mm spacers as well). These are all number from the raw catalogue. I was unable to use ranchos as they did not have any in nz with the same configuration as what i needed. Being twin tube you can't run them upside down so it limited my options. So i used a raw rear shock which is a nm498. The front coils are a 60mm lifted spring for the prado as they do not do an actual 3 inch lifted one. The part number for that was c59-244 and the shock which is up to you whether you want to use it because its not a listed prado one but i wanted more travel out of it is the g6008.
Wicked thanks mate ill look into thoses parts. How do you find the ride with that set up? I have the Raw nitro shocks all round with old oem 80 series springs in the back and standard height aftermarket prado in the front and it feels super harsh on road as well as off road. Do you find the nitro max are softer? Cheers
because i am not running bushes in mine (i run o'hallaran joints which are like a rose joint and i currently have no swaybars) she is a right pig to drive but that will be sorted. I think the nitro max's valving is a bit to high for a surf but then again i like a firmer ride so they are fine for me.
well i have been a bit slow putting these photos up but after getting the coilovers sorted in the front and a couple of other things i managed to flex it up to check any binding issues and to see what it looked like and this is the result. I am really impressed with it and once again Tom has built me a bit of a weapon to play around with
