something is up here
so after i recently cleaned my manifold and blocked off my EGR, my fuel economy has just gone to shit...i barely get 500kms to the full tank... Help?
Its stock standard except for the poddy and the bigger exhaust...m getting an intercooler tmrw, reckon installing that will help fuel economy?
cheers

Get rid of the pod.

Re: something is up here
and plumb in a snorkel?? how much would tht cost, as i dunt have much cash in hand...make another CAI? Just for clarification, why would removing the pod help?
cheers

Re: something is up here
I'm just guessing, but I imagine you have put a pod straight on the end of the turbo like I have seen others do on their TD27s.
It just ends up drawing hot air from the engine bay.
We all know that a couple of degrees in air temp makes a big difference in performance on a turbo diesl.
Either make a proper cold air box to go with it, or fit the standard air cleaner back on.
A snorkle will increase your fuel consumption as it is a further restriction to the intake system.

Re: something is up here
This is my current set up, i made pipe, was thinking bout making a box around it awile ago u can see it in here

bt yea, it was fine when i initially had the pod, it was fine, all until I cleaned the manifold n blocked the EGR

Re: something is up here
maybe no sealing well
as a guess

89 safari, pto winch, 33x15 simexs. sliders,75mm lift . turbo intercoolered
Re: something is up here
My guess is when you put the manifold back on you didnt do it properly & now its sucking air in ....after all it was the last thing you did.

Re: something is up here
hmmm u might have a point, i need to get me the metal manifold gaskets again, cause the one i got from repco was paper, n its shit. how do i check if i am sucking/losing air around the manifold seals?

Re: something is up here
Spray liberal amounts of crc or brake clean around the manifold joints at hot idle and listen to see if there is a TINY increase in revs.

Re: something is up here
does the terrano have an egr butterfly in the intake?
Re: something is up here
Hey, I'm not being critical here, but where is all the fuel going?
It will be black smoking (unburned fuel) or falling out on the ground (leaking fuel pump).
No disrespect DB, but as you know I ran a pod on the turbo for a few years and even with a leaking fuel pump, I could still get over 600k's from a tank.
With a manifold air leak, wouldn't make that much difference with a diesel as they don't have vacuum in the manifold at any stage through the rev range so it would be boost it would be losing.
Situations like this, it may be worth upping the boost a bit so you produce more horsepower and end up not needing so much throttle to get the same pick up.
I will be watching with interest.
Cheers,

I keep looking for the loose nut behind the wheel, but I can't find it!!

Yip. One would hope it has been removed or jambed open. I was going to cover that up there ^^^ but lets just go one step at a time

Cheers,
When I upped the boost on mine it blew a joint in the inlet tract apart a little.
There was no discernable additional smoke, and the milage decreased.
Having seen that it sounds plausable to me.

How about engine power?? Has power reduced at same time? Or still about same? Or increased?

Re: something is up here
so at the moment the most boost it will be pushing might b about 13psi, (off at the intake manifold), as i have blocked the regulator hose that goes into the wastegate actuator.
so to pile the boost on, i gotta weld up the valve on the manifold, intercool and then dial it up with a boost controller right?
Cheers

I havent had a massive increase in power, but i have more power in the lower to mid range, top end power pretty much the same, as a benchmark, i went up the bombays northbound before and after i cleaned the manifold, it held 110kms upwards, but it was a tad cooler after the manifold was cleaned, mind you i had to let the hot air thru by having the heater on full blast.

here have a look and /or ask this guy http://www.trademe.co.nz/Members/Listin ... er=3911464
my mate got one and its is a copy of a safari snorkel minus the badging. just got another for a 80 crusier and looks like a air flow snorkel copy. and cheap too.

Cheers,
blocking egr and leaving egr butterfly operating can increase fuel consumption, especially on worn engines.

I did the same test on Sunday arvo. 5th gear, started at 102k's (i phone GPS), put my foot flat to the floor. EGT's 550deg max, engine temp went up slightly (just over half), constant 19 psi boost, passed everything and was still doing 102k's at the top. Successful test me thinks.
13 psi is all you can get without removing or disabling the relief valve. If you are rough, smack the top of the mushroom with a big hammer or remove the valve and replace it with a steel blanking plug. With the waste gate hose disconnected and blocked of you should get between 16psi-18psi boost easy. I have done this to 2 terranos now and both have produced a heap of power.

Re: something is up here
alrite the fuel problem seemed to have fixed itself after i installed a new fuel filter and bled the fuel lines!
