K&N Apollo Air Filter
Hi there,
I after some info about the K&N apollo air filter, seams to me that it would suit me as the new motor in my Suzuki's air intake is on the wrong side and mounting an air box is going to be a struggle. Just wanting to know if anyone has got one and what they are like.
Also where is a good place to purchase one, got quoted $380 from Repco which is a little steep, may look at purchasing from the states if I can't get a better price.
Cheers Thor

You work in a machining shop, just buy a filter and make a housing to suit?

For the time to make one similar it would be as cheap to buy one.

I have one on a TD42 with after market turbo 18 psi feeds turbo enough air, easy to fit any where. Takes 10 minutes to undo all the bolts to clean air filter, I wanted a Donaldson air box but there too big. I paid about $360 I think it was worth it. Mines straight on the turbo inlet.

Re: K&N Apollo Air Filter
Pioneer Autoparts are the NZ K & N distributor.
I have an K & N element inside my Prado -71 airbox.
Recently DDAN told me that when he changed to one of these and then as he always does, got his oil analysed, the oil lab asked what have you done, your oil is so much more filthy. (twice as much) Only variance from the norm was the change away from the factory paper element.......
What you are proposing will not have room for the extra wrap K & N pre-cleaner. With DDAN's experience this sounds essential.
I have one for mine somewhere...........!

got 1 for pigfrmr from my local repco for i think $280,my price was trade tho. pm pigfrmr as i think he his changing his system
Re: K&N Apollo Air Filter
Its well documented that K & N type filters adds a few more HP but also let plenty of dust into your engine. I found dust on the engine side of the filter with mine so went back to OEM.
SWB V6 Paj with one or two mods

Re: K&N Apollo Air Filter
I have been doing a bit of research on k&n filters recently, and if I had done said research before I bought one, I wouldn't have wasted my money.

Re: K&N Apollo Air Filter
theres no easy answers to filters but I played around with a bit of shit and ended up going away from K&N's
I used to have a 14" K&N filter and a K&N oiled foam prefilter on my 70 series cruiser which let it breath well but I ditched it in the end coz way too much shit was getting through it, everytime I'd check the filter there would be shit caked on the inside of it as well as the outside
so I went back to the snorkle with the cruiser airbox and an oiled finer filter in it and I stopped having problems with shit getting through the filter and everything always looked clean as a whistle when I checked it

my 40 series cruiser has got an enclosed 12 1/2 inch filter on top of the holly carb and is ducted through the firewall and draws air from inside the cab, I only run standard paper filters and tend to go through them pretty quick (ie: the one below lasted 1 trip) the outside of the filters get the shit clogged out of them but they always stay clean inside unlike the way the K&Ns were ending up

How do you find yours? Does it let alot of dirt and shit through? Talked to others and they havnt had any trouble with K&N.

Re: K&N Apollo Air Filter
Yeah the mud goes straight through a K&N filter (they don't really do much filtering!) - we gave up on them years ago.
We've had good luck with the finer filters in the past (like sadam has), but we've just been running paper filters in the Hilux. The only problem we've had was from one getting too wet from water down the snorkel driving in heavy rain - it just turned into a wet rag (which meant no power), but that's only happened once. I've checked the air box a few times since, and it seems it commonly sucks a bit of water when driving in rain but obviously it's not normally enough to cause a problem.
If I was to try something different now, I'd give an AEM dry filter a go. They sound like they would be good (don't they all?!), and get a few good reviews from other off-roaders on the interweb, so they might be worth a shot ...and one of their hydrophobic pre-filters might help reduce the chance of water issues?

Re: K&N Apollo Air Filter
Cheers for all the info guys. Think I will stay away from one, they are a good idea but its a shame they don't filter well for off road use.
