Help loading topo maps onto Garmin nuvi 1390

Post by tgaguy1 »

Hi all.

I have purchased a garmin nuvi 1390 and want to run some sort of topo map on it for 4wding as well as the usual road nav for when I am on the highway.
I have searched both on this forum and on the net on how to do this.
There is lots of info out there, but the problem I have is I don't understand it. I am not very computer or software savy.
One other thing which may or may not be a problem is the garmin came with basecamp pc software instead of mapsource. All topo map downloads I have come across assume you use mapsource.
What I am asking here is, can anyone give me instructions on how to achieve my goal and where to download sofware from. I need instructions to be fairly simple so I can follow what you are on about.

Thanks for your help.

Cheers

Jase.

You should be able to register you garmin online at www.garmin.com, and then download the mapsource application.

There is a way to put the maps on without mapsource, I just can't find out right now as I''m at work. Will look tonight.

Or easier go to map world or google search hem or you local hunting shop and grab a new zealand topo map chip. Pretty sure there on trademe to just search topo map.

I got the one out of my dads hand held colour screen garmin gps and copied data. All the garmins are same mapping set up im pretty sure

Ok, once you have done the following:

download topo files
http://gwprojects.org/forum/viewtopic.p ... 678#p26678
install 7-zip
http://www.7-zip.org/download.html
extract files
select all 4 files right click and select extract here
Run the installer
LINZTOPOv5_2.exe

You should have a folder c:\Program Files\NZ Open Topo Addon Project.

If you create a folder on your Garmin memory card called "garmin"and copy the contents of the above folder into it, the maps should appear on your garmin once you put the card in and start it up.

does it need to go on the external memory card or the internal memory?, just tried it on my 1350 and doesn't appear to have worked?

I used it on external. I can check on my GPS later....

Righto, I have followed those instructions thanks Bill.
I loaded the entire folder contents onto the micro SD card and inserted it into the Nuvi unit.
I don't that it worked though.
How do I change the maps on the GPS unit from the road navigation ones to topo ones.
Also here is a screen shoot of what they look like on Basecamp on my laptop. It doesn't have any roads or much detail as to be usable. Even when I zoom in nothing much shows up.

What am I doing wrong?

Hi Jase, I had trouble when I purchased my GARMIN 60csx , I had trouble registering and setting up Mapsource, still to this day doesn't work. In the end after much mucking around the late BrentC loaded all the maps including Queensland Aussie on to a micro SD sent it to me and every thing works fine, until the day I need to update then :( , no more BrentC  .
On another note what has happened to nzgpsmaps ?? Brent's company ?.

ONE OF THE GOOD GUYS ---- TAKEN TO SOON ---- RIP,

Brent's web site is still up and running, though does not look like it has been updated for a while. He definitely exited to soon.

Open GPS forum is full of good info. The trouble I have is it is almost a foreign language. However to update...

I read through the thread on open GPS about downloading topo maps onto a Garmin. They suggested that once the four map files have been amalgamated into one exe file that it be installed into map source. So I installed mapsource and installed the topo map exe file onto my laptop. Then selected and sent the topo maps to my nuvi. I can use the maps now and it auto routes as well. I have still to test it; as I am at overseas at work, I have only been able to run a GPS simulation. All up I have spent a lot of time on this, but I have learnt a lot of what the nuvi can do.
Thanks to all for you help and suggestions, and in particular, thanks wjw for your help. It is people like you that make this forum a success.

Cheers
