How modern a diesel?
I reckon look for a 300 TDI 2.5l out of a 94-98 Discovery, keep it Land Rover. I haven't done it but plenty have, check out some of the Land Rover specific forums. I think you need to try and find a manual engine as the autos have electronic diesel control that would probably complicate the process.
There is a Brazilian version of the 300 TDI that is a 2.8l. They did have an NZ supplier at one stage but they're at least $10k for a brand new motor.
Give one of the Land Rover specialists in Christchurch a call for some guidance.
