What needs to be done for a TD42 rebuild?
What needs to be done for a TD42 rebuild?
Have been making inquiries to have a DTS turbo kit placed on my GQ.Compression is down on one of the clyinders.Truck done about 400K.1990 model.Been advised by turbo fitter to recco engine or get a replacement.I have seen an imported engine for $5K.Would I be able to get my engine recco`d for $5K or less? What would need to be done on such a job?

Everything apart from the mains can be done with the engine in place. rings, big ends, and the head would be the main onesi guess, but you would want the mains done aswell at those K's i would think.
There's quite a few on trademe that pop up in the 2k region that have done less than 200,000.

Hi DB,thought about that option. But would I really be sure that everything in the replacement engine was OK?Was thinking at least with the recco option I would know for sure that everything is ligit.Having engine recco`d locally that is.How long does a recco take by a good diesel mechanic, usually take?

Not sure on time as i have never had one rebuilt (yet) but would have thought within a week in a good garage in a city with suppliers and specialist trades near buy.
A mate of mine down in westport payed $6000 for a complete rebuild after he hydraulic'd his TD42.

Yeah?? Doesn't sound too bad, what does that include??
Rings, big ends, full head recon, bore hone etc etc
You would have seen the Safari with the bonnet scoop in the pics from the last Thompsons trip??
He's got the bling turbo system ($8000), but one interesting tip i picked up from him was that they used the injector pump housing from a TD27 out of a Mistral with the boost compensator on it and swapped the internals from his TD42 pump into it. Something worth keeping in mind i thought

why not buy a truck witha turbo engine and swap it over? thats what i did, i purchased a 1988 lwb safari with a aftermarket safari brand turbo for $6500 and swapped engines with my swb, also took the pto winch, bullbars, tyres, heavy duty clutch and 3" exhaust , put my parts back on it and then sold it on trademe. the whole exercise cost me $800, that included paying a mechanic to swap the engines.
If you have done 400k this ones still got annother 200 in it.

It`s looking like this maybe the price breakdown.
Engine recco $3500
Modified injector pump $2000
Turbo DTS plus fitting $4000
3" exhuast $400
Makes Mudchukkas` option look good eh.
May want to get those injectors done.Last time my were done apparently was 1995.Replaced a seal/gasket around water pump, new radiator hose,
sonic bath injector nozzel and washers etc.$730inc.
I think I will register myself in a small bussiness before I go ahead with the above.Sounds like alot of $.Though not compared to a new rig.
$600-$650 should be enough for you to have o/hauled injectors.
New vehicle emission test comming into effect this Oct.I belive.

We can rebuild your injectors with new nozzles and re-set the breaking pressures for $80 / injector if you're interested.
Have you had the injectors done yet DaveM
1989 LWB Isuzu Bighorn, Intercooled 4JB1T, Ball Joint flip, Torsion bar wind, 3 inch stainless homebuilt snorkel,1/2 done electric fan mod, front sway bar quick disconnects, 15x8 ROH White Spokes,33x12.5x15 Hankooks.
Flicking through a couple of old(ish) mags, there was a TD42 with 5000km on it for $10k.
Was pretty much a brand new motor by the sound of it, turbo, 24 and 12v alternators
Dave,
That was Kevvy Knott's engine from AU. The 5000kms is all comp work, but it was built with the right internals and has had ALOT of fuel pump work done by Hiway Diesel Services in Coopers Plains. But since Kevvy rolled that truck a week ago, its probably not the best donor for a transplant.

Hmmmm, how did I miss that one

Mitch, if the offer still stands, I'd be keen to go ahead with the injectors. Sorry, missed the original post for some reason.
