Hi
I recently bought a 94 Terrano TD27.
It wasn't smoking when I bought it but now it smokes quite a lot of black smoke on acceleration.
I have read that this is over fueling and the amount of fuel can be adjusted but I cant seem to find where.
Can anyone tell me where the screw is and maybe some tips on what I should be doing when I find it?

if its suddenly just started smoking then i doubt its from overfueling.
check the basics like air filter.
what sort of injection pump does it have? mechanical or electronic one?

yep air filter was the first thing I checked, took it out and it still smoked.
Have put some Morley's in the tank and it hasn't made a difference.
not sure if it has a mech or elec pump, dads borrowed it because he had an accident the other day so cant check.

Is over a timespan of a week to sudden? my father has been driving it and I only noticed when i drove it to work on Saturday.
Im trying not to jump the gun here, its my first diesel and im fully open to suggestions.

Hey there. There are way too many reasons to list here in one go that can cause the black smoking.
To me there is a few things to consider first. Don't touch the fuel screw, or the next post will be "TD27 with no power".
Diesels need a fine balance of air and fuel to burn well and make lots of power.
Air system;
Air filter, turbo boost level, free movement of air/boost into the combustion chamber, turbo waste gate, mufflers and exhaust system to name few places there could be an issue.
Fuel system;
Mechanical injection rarely has problems, but some fine adjustments can fall out of tune.
It sounds like it has enough fuel but the atomization could be a problem or the pump is delivering too much squirt.
Things to do to help with trouble shooting;
Remove air filter, disconnect waste gate tube at turbo and block off, disconnect exhaust. If you do these things one by one and test drive each time you change anything. All of these suggestions should only be temporary and put back when they have been discounted from the equation.
My gut feeling is the problem has been building up over time and is probably due to the EGR or crank case breather depositing oil and gunk in the cross over pipe and/or the intake manifold. Mufflers can cause this problem too and should be replaced from time to time.
I'm guessing it has done a few K's too.
I'm a crap typist, and this is about all from me (for now).

Awesome thanks for taking the time out for that write up, will give it a go this weekend.
Has done a few K's but at 218000 doesnt seem like much in the 4wd diesel world.
