wheel spacers

Post by jaydogg1 »

hey what do you guys think about spacers. i can get some 50mm spacers for my sj410 but a few people have said they put a lot of wear on the wheel bearings. i thought since i drive in the surf ect to get to dive spots my bearings will prob not last long anyway so whats the harm?

the extra leverage applied by a wheel spacer will have a marginal effect on the life of the wheel bearing. compared to the damage caused by the ingress of water , mud and dirt.

as above about additional wheel bearing loading etc. I ran 50mm spacers for about a year coz I had problems with tyres hitting the pitman arm and although it was probably a more vehicle specific problem with the power steer setup on the truck it had a noticable effect on the already dodgy steering and made it noticibly twitchy with the wheels further away from where the steering piviots on the kingpins. I never bothered with the spacers or needed them again after I got rid of the saginaw steering setup and changed over to toymotor steering box etc
