Godley Glacier 3rd-5th-7th Aug 2012

Post by Taz »

"Well... I met some weird people, saw shit views, ate horrid food, and the weather was crap... I don't recomend this trip to anyone  " - kbjj

Another awesome trip! Cheers everyone!

That time of year again!

Updates:

FIREWOOD

IcedJohno will be bringing his trailer and is able to get cheap wood. For $10 a truck (possibly a bit more if not many people are keen?) he is happy to bring some down (for both huts). If you would prefer this than to take your own post in here AND/or PM him please so he has an idea of numbers.

Hangi

Batfastard is a raging GC and is bring his UFO cooker and a feed for those that are interested. One night (the Sat) on the Godley trip and one (Monday I guess?) up the Hopkins.

Menu :D
Godley trip hangi
Pork ,lamb,chicken,veg. $10 each

Hopkins trip
Silverside ,mustard sauce,spuds,carrots ,cabbage.$10 each.

Places are for the Hangi are limited, add your name to the list further near the end of the thread.

There is a New World in Rolleston if people would like to shop there before the 9am SHARP departure.

Alternatively there is a Pak n' Save and Countdown in Hornby if you are coming that way.

2010 Glacier Trip
2011 Glacier Trip
Glacier trip - 3rd-4th, home/onwards 5th August

Image

Grade 2 with the option of driving some more difficult bits near the lake that can be classed as Grade 4-5 depending on snow, so there is something for everyone.

Family friendly trip.

If you have a trailer queen let me know and we will try and arrange to leave your tow wagon at one of the farms along the way up the valley.

You all have 3 options:
1.) Depart from Rolleston BP 9am on the 3rd, hit Tekapo around lunch. Re-fuel, eat, make the most of the last flushing toilets then hit the track. This may take up to an hour depending how many trucks we have but will leave us with plenty of time to set up camp in daylight at the hut. Approx 2.5 hours to the hut.

In Tekapo we will gather in the carpark just South of the Shell station on the right. It is at the end of the same block of buildings.

2.) Depart in the afternoon and stay nearby to meet on Sat morning or do a night run to the hut. A night run would need someone who knows the way or for my awesome sense of direction and the like to meet them at the bottom of the valley. My truck loves to drink, so I'm not a huge fan of this idea haha but will help out where I can.

3.) Fang it from Rolly BP early Sat morning in order to meet us at the bottom of the Mcauley on the way up the Godley on Sat morning. If this is the only option for some I will work out some times.

As mentioned, we will head up the Godley on Sat, do the usual wander, snowman, sliding down hills and paddling in the lake?
We will then split into two groups here if people want to walk around longer. The first group will head back up to the hut in daylight, second group will head up in the dark as a bit of a night trip. If you have a shiny you are better going up in the day light depending on your confidence as the night lines are generally a bit rougher.

Sunday morning we all leave the hut spotless (No one leaves until it is how we found it or better please!) then rock on back to Tekapo for some fuel and head home or onto the:

Hopkins Trip - 5th-6th, home on 7th.

Image

Same as Godley, grade 2 with harder bits optional at the top of the valley.

Plans for this are a bit more laid back. We will roll up to Red Hut on the Sunday, head as far up the valley as we can on the Monday then back down to Red hut or Dodger Hut depending how we get on.
If there is a ton of snow up here we may struggle for time at the top. If not, there are some pretty big rocks to pick our way through. This is optional as it will be walkable as others attempt it if you wish, or if it all turns to custard we can wander elsewhere in the valley. We will need DOC passes for this/these huts which are $5 each. You can grab these beforehand from a DOC office. There is one in Twizel that we can drop into on the way if need be but I was told on the phone that it is ok if you grab one afterwards, just so long as you get one at some stage as the money goes towards keeping the huts open.

Same rules as always.
Your gun license and a gun is OK if you want to go for a shot, but they are locked in your truck out of sight unless they are being used and no drinking before use. If there is really heavy snow use your common sense, you know your own abilities and gear.
The huts are public so you are not guaranteed a bed inside. This means everyone must have their own tent/truck setup for sleeping in just in case. Please also be mindful of any other members of the public there at the time. We've had good feedback from other public users from the last 2 years which has been awesome so lets keep it that way.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

TENT!
Snorkel - You can get away without one up the Godley but it's at your own risk.
Front and rear tow hook.
Your own recovery gear.
First Aid kit.
Suitable footwear for rocks and snow.
Food for 4-5 days (some extra noodles and a tin or two or something to chuck in them would do), just in case. You'll need more than this if you're coming up the Hopkins. There is a supermarket in Tekapo, but it is quite expensive.
Spare fuel if you feel its applicable to your truck.
WARM CLOTHING and plenty of it.
Your own rubbish home with you. Idea is you leave the place better than you find it.
Firewood for the hut
Donation for the hut

TENT!

Everyone who is not sleeping in their truck MUST have their own tent again. There are bigger numbers this year so more people will be sleeping outside. If you don't have a decent tent or want to save on room ask around and make your own plans to share with others.

If anyone has a sail or decent tarp to tie between trucks, bring it please if you have the room.

WHAT YOU SHOULD BRING IF YOU CAN:

Fire Extinguisher.
PRS Radio. We will be using channel 19.
Chains.
Camp cooker if you want to cook your own food and not wait for the hut cooker to be free.

Right, think that's enough waffling. If I've missed anything let me know.

Edit; seems the voting option does not work. I voted and then looked at the results and no takers for either option! ??

See you next year!

Was just asking if the poll was working when you posted that as it wouldn't let me vote.

Will double check to make sure I haven't done something wrong.

Edit: OK, poll is beyond me. Just post or PM and say if you're keen or not please.
