transfer case stuck in gear?

having trouble with this transmisson issue for a while and here goes
with transfer case in netural and engine running I can change thru all gears ok no cruching etc but when I engage the transfer case it crunches/grinds into gear but when I let the clutch out no matter what gear I'm in the jeep only goes in backward

have had the transmisson out but hav"nt pulled it apart except for removing the top to remove it, have checked the forks are in the right places and changed the oil after a swim but drove onto the trailer that day

it is a 3 spd t-90c box with a t 18 transfer case in a cj4a jeep

ideas cos I'm fresh out of them

sounds like a clutch problem up untill that bit

if the truck only goes backwards no matter what gear your in it might be a selector problem and the gearbox isnt coming out of reverse


have you turned the input shaft by hand since you've removed the gearbox and checked to see if you can select the forward and reverse gears ok

yep had the top off it today turns freely when transfer in netural but binds up when in hi or low
not game to let foot off the clutch don't want a drive thru garage

It must be stuck in reverse so when you select a forward gear it locks up.

With engine running and gearbox in neutral does it try to drive in reverse?
If so then I'd say you have your selectors in the wrong position from when you removed the levers previously.

still in the P I T A after refitting it

will check the selectors and turn by hand ....................... then I will report back

pulled the top off and lined the slectors up
now can change between 2 nd and 3rd (sycro)but nothing else (nonsycro)including trasnsfer case
but will start in gear with clutch pedal depressed and not take off so don't think the clutch is stuck
some think still ain't happy
