Good idea to start with a surf or hilux. Then when ready you can upgrade to a patrol or cruser.

Then after a few year's and want to get seriouse you can work your way into a Suzuki,

Also alot of people say keep away from mitsi diesels, i havnt seen many problems myself, apart from the newer 4M40's, They are VERY bad.

most people say the earlier 2.5s are worse. I've had a couple of 2.5 powered diesels, both with high km when I sold them, and not a single problem. servicing/looking after them is key. I used to aska lot of them but I wouldn't give them shit when cold, and serviced them regularly and never an issue.
same goes with the surfs. heaps of people have all sorts of engines in surfs for years and never have issues. it's all about keeping an eye on things.

are you dead set on a diesel? I've got a 3 litre swb pajero and it goes fine. bit heavier on fuel than a diesel but it's plenty torquey. I always use like zero gas when I'm off road compared to a couple of mates in terranos, as until I'm in a sticky bit I just cruise round quarter throttle at like 2000rpm.
It's a bit gutless on the road, though, but goes fine, really. It's not a race car.

oh, I'm not selling it, sorry. I should've said that. was just speaking of my experiences with mine.
I'm in wellington though.
TBH I'd probably sell it if someone offered me reasonable money for it. I think I blew up my only other legal car this evening though :(

Yeah. my mate had a 2.5 pajero, no issue and it had 360,000km's on the clock.
at a garage i worked at we had 3 4M40's come in with cracked head gaskets. all around the 80-120km mark, the heads cannot be machined, so instead of being just a gasket replacement, its the whole head.

Just a thought why not a V6 Bighorn Irmisher SWB. Mines done 281kms and goes well and it get a bit of a beating and the motor never complains. In saying that I have been through a few gearboxes but thats just self inflicted and 2nd hand ones not being maintained previously. They are also pretty cheap I reckon.

in summary, there's nothing wrong with any vehicle type as long as it's been looked after :P
drive a few, do some googling, and go in well informed :)

Listing #: 454279957 TM

This wld be worth a look solid axle, petrol reg, solid axle, ding up the body and no worries

Not as pertty as a paj or bighorn but get you further for less, and cheap to mod.

Took the old mans ifs version a few places it shouldnt go....

But really if you can stretch the budget this sounds like a whole lotta 4wd for the money (5g askin)

Listing #: 451832643 TM

Has been on here for a while and started around 10g sounds like a must go thing. Seems like it has all/most of the good bits in it, am confused why it has sat on TM, I dont know? all I can guess is the 3.8 drinks like Andy Capp. Cert for it all and theres more than a g+ in tyres alone, 2trans cases, lockers, rears up front etc.... in summary Fk yeah!!!!

only problem with starting out in a 4x4 like this is your experience doesnt grow as the vehicle evolves. your just asking for trouble

Not quite what meets the eye, a good collection of parts but it has had a hard life has a blown rear diff and the guy that owns it is in canada and his mate selling it doesn't really care, and neither would I if I was him haha. From what i have seen it would be hard to get a warrent for it it and I doubt it would come with one like the ad says as it is too much work for the guy selling it who will get no benefit from it.

Cheers,
Pete

They're light and they're good with the right traction aids but watch the front diff, CV's and rear axles as they're prone to breaking.

If you are interested I'm thinking about selling my 93 doublecab L200.
2.5 non turbo diesel, standard. auto hubs, tuffdeck, torneau cover, good condition body, nice interior. Not been offroaded by me or the previous owners by the looks of it, spent most of its life in Gore.
320k on the clock. reconditioned gearbox, new water pump, all engine belts tensioners and seals done at 307k. previous owner told me the owner before him had reconditioned the engine at some stage, but absolutely no proof of this.
ummmm full service a few weeks ago. looking for $3800. can chuck up photos or PM you with them if you're interested. solid truck, no race car though.

They are cheap fun and capable. I have never driven a stockish one but love mine, you will need to find someone that has driven that Engine setup with an auto or teat drive it. I love autos when they have a v8 in front of them.

There's a LWB Safari here in Blenheim for sale at $4500. Mate of mine selling - high k's but replacement engine (old one cracked head). Aircon and rev counter not working but that may be electrical cos they apparently worked before the engine swap. Standard truck with no sign of serious rust but a couple of panel scrapes. Good solid reliable truck, but they are BIG... Could get it to ChCh pretty easily...
