LN60 surf build

Post by Roenut »

hey people, just bought my second surf a couple of days ago and im dead keen to get stuck into it!

its a bog standard 2lt 1985 hilux surf.
first thing to do was put a better audio system into it (scored it out of my last surf before i sold it)
second step is to sort the suspension out before it goes for a wof.
tim (hosehustler) supplied me a pair of ln106 front leaf springs as the origionals are sagged beyond help.
the back end has had a shunt at some stage, so i got stuck into replacing the rear shackles and shackle bushes today. it drives so much better...

future mods are-
better wheels and tyres
fit the snorkel
mild lift
lsd
and possibly a winch and solid front bumper (if i can afford it)

i'll keep the build updated as much as i can as i do it

I would recommend you if are gettin a LSD, get a spacer machined up and fitted into the clutch pack to tighten it up,, std, old (worn) LSD's are pretty much useless

haha you can just spot the axle stands under there for extra (wobble) protection...
my last hilux had a 1kzt conversion, so this one is much slower, but goes very well compared to other 2.4's ive driven.
looks like its been well looked after through its life

ok so the left rear eye mount is a little bit dog looking.
obviously was welded back on after the shunt that wrecked the shackles.
what do you guys reckon? tidy up and reweld, or put a replacement one on?
will be going to tomsoffroad in the weekend for a reweld if its going to be fine.

i cant seem to add the picture or add a link at all. odd...

righteo, put another fuel level sender in tonight.
also whipped in some new shocks all around for a bit of 'comfort'
these will be sold as soon as i get new lifted springs all around.
ill put some raw nitro shocks on with the new springs.
next up is sorting out the wheels and tyres.
i can see the $ dropping

that eye mount does look bit dodgy. I'd be taking it to tom to get his opinion.

okey dokey, took it for a 4x4 in the weekend and managed to blow oil all over the underside of the truck. front crank seal was leaking quite a bit, so i pulled it to bits and put a new one in. i was putting it all back together and spotted the sump gasket was also falling out (explains even more as to why theres so much oil). what the hell couldve caused that!!!!? also found greasy slime in the cooling system. i hope like hell the engines not screwed!
it apparently had the head gasket done in it, and i can see newish gaskets all over the place.
should i really bother with this motor? i cant really afford to buy a good 2.8 to jam into it right now. i can get the necessary parts to rebuild a knackered one at cost price through work.
what should i do????? :(

put a new crank seal in. and when i checked the timing, the cambelt snapped like a match stick. barely any resistance whatsoever. i can only put it down to possible oil contamination. went the whole slog and ended up replacing everything while i was in there. lets hope the engine holds together till i find another motor...

ok, day off today so i tidied up residual oil left from the leaking sump gasket.
got it right on the second new gasket  they are tricky things to get the right tension on the bolts too! a little over tight and it splays out the gasket ends and starts leaking.
im fitting up the cb radio to it now. many people still using them offroad?
