10th & 11th March

Post by andy3542 »

Ill start this one...

Had an interesting afternoon/evening. Picked the Landy up from the garage new alloy radiator and fan fitted all ready to go play tomorrow. On the way home suddenly heard a whining followed by the loss of all drive (on the entrance to the greenland roundabout at 5pm). jumped out to find that the pinion on the rear diff had failed causing it to fall out. put her into 4wd only to find that the rear diff was locking up... i had no tools with me so had to wait until Brad (my new Bmw mechanic friend who deserves a beer) pulled over and let me borrow his socket set so i could remove a half shaft and carry on my way. showering the cars behind me in diff oil. (didn't realize until i got home)

Image

so an apology to all those who were held up by my trucks failure and anyone who was showered in diff oil...

Image

now got to pull the rear and front diffs and change them over as i don't have a spare 4.1.1 ratio land rover diff... :( and as anyone whose worked on a series land rover will know the fronts are an absolute c**t to do.

cheers

that sucks bro. so much for playing. My big achievement was looking at my zuk and thinking that I should lock it up with all my parts in it and all. Still not done.

Might get some cleaning ready for painting done this weekend if the weather is shit, otherwise it's removing the head on my Fuego Turbo

still tweaking the surf.

fitted 88c hiflow thermostat. had a 82c one in (as per typical mod to save the head) but was having combustion problems when over 3k. its runs a lot better with the 88c but temps have gone from sitting rock hard on 82 to 90-92c.

now to see if the radiator is going to hold up.

Discovered a brake fluid leak from the block on the front diff where the flexible hose meets pipes that go to the front calipers. At some stage one of them had been overtightened and the coupling had almost pulled over the flare. Took it down to Autostop the put a new coupling on it and made a new flare.

Noticed shorty was also pulling to the right under braking so greased the caliper slide and swapped one pad from one side to the other, if it is still not right I will need to do caliper kits. Finished king pin bearings and wheel bearings, repacking cv's etc last weekend.

Muchly thank you. It's been some hard work, but it's almost there. I'll get an auto sparky to do most of the wiring on it, saves me from stuffing round with it and causing (more) fire hazards

Yeah, it's a bit misaligned when it's tight, but it should be an easy fix.

Can't cut 5mm steel with a jugsaw. A grinding wheel works though (I, too, ran out of cutting discs)

Just got to install the drive shafts and check the fluid levels...
Went thru 18L of ATF fluid when I flushed her out....
At least now its full of clean fluid.....
Then its onto the pto shear pin up size and light install for Easter....
Oh and I may get a visitor to tap in an EGT probe in his Prado....

Spent the day in Woodhill ,have finally sorted the last tracks to be done for the 24hr challenge ,Many thanks to Warren (4wd bits) and Dion for their help .we have quite a few very long stages that will have the teams saying "are we there yet" :) and only 3 reasonable short ones but even those should take the teams 30/40 mins to do each stage  .Roger the park operator has spent alot of very long hours making new tracks with a digger that will be open for the first time for our comp so should surprise a few of the locals that know the park well ,"Roll on Easter"

Stripped out some of the dash ready for the heater core swap over (hope this fixes the bubbling sound under the dash - done everything else but a new engine). While its apart I will get the new stereo sorted too.

Last week at FH for me this week (finish on completion of my shift Wed), have a fvew days off to get back into "day worker mode" before I start at the new job.

On my way to work I discovered that with the centre console removed and the radio surround out that my indicators didnt work. Seems the hazard button needs to be in place for them to work - Who knew that - LOL
