Hi all,
I have been asked to post this onto here on behalf of the NZFWDA execs
regards Rohan
Waitawheta 4WD track
Repair and upgrade work has started on this track, located within the Northern Zone area west of Waihi township. Work commenced on Monday 12 March and has been made possible by the generosity of two NZFWDA affiliated club members who are donating both personal and machine time to the project. In addition, some materials (culvert pipes) have been donated by the BOP4WD Club. South Waikato 4WD Club members will also be assisting with labour (vegetation clearance). The NZFWDA Northern Zone will be covering expenses such as fuel and material costs. The track will be closed to four-wheeling for the duration of the works (which are expected to take at least a week to complete) and thereafter will remain closed over the winter months up until 19th October (the Friday immediately before Labour Weekend).
Regards,
Russell De Luca
NZFWDA Northern Zone President
Waitawheta Track maintanance and winter closure
Re: Waitawheta Track maintanance and winter closure
HEEEELLLL YEEEEEAAAAH
Its awesome that this work is finally happening!!!!!
I remember when I was a kid we used to drive that track in a day with Land Rovers on 750 16's and Cruisers on 31's all with nothing other than the odd tow and some minor spade work.
Be awesome to see it back in that condition. Maybe the Series 1 might get to do the track one more time just for old times sake.
Awesome news, off to share it around!!!!!

Good to see it getting some maintenance but I'm with Richard...hope they don't make it tooo easy
When I first started 4wheelin my club would do this track every christmas eve, mostly stock trucks, small tyres and not one winch between them

something had to happen about controlling the dirty water runoff that was running into enviroment waikato control area otherwise enviroment waikato and doc were going to close it perminantly which would of been bad, it will not become Thompsons track Te aroha side grade by any stretch

dosnt matter how good they make it, only lasts so long. 12 months of rain and 4x4s hammering it will be back to a hard track again.

Where abouts is this track?
I was tramping up there last weekend. Followed the Waitawheta river right up to the Waitawheta hut (we accessed the track from Franklin Road - just past Karangaheke Gorge)
Cheers
