Public use of Defibrillators

There has been some talk about taking defibrillators on club trips. Well the good news is in the next few months 30 will be available to be used for free by the community throughout the country.

This has been confirmed to me today, however it is still not public knowledge. I am guessing there will be some requirements and conditions (training, registered groups only, 1st etc) that will go with it and I will keep those interested up date as best I can through emails and PM's.

If your club would be interested in this PM me your email details and put a post up so I don't get requests from every club member in every club for every trip.

Bloody good idea, when you look at the difference these things make to your chance of survival vs just CPR.

Would be good if they were given to the local St Johns or similar, to loan out for a small fee, (like Mtn Radios) so Motorsport clubs etc can all get a chance to have access to them.

my partner (nurse) is trying to get our club to buy one. Im not convinced. great idea but need to know more on life span etc. not much good as a club if the battery dies after 2 years. wat are the details on the the community based ones???

All depends on the brand, but we have 15 or so at work and the batteries have a 4-5yr life. When you say not much good if battery dies after 2 years, why? Replace the battery and its good for another 2 years.

It's one of those items that seem too expensive, until you have the need for it.

fab idea, having personally been involved in circumstances where one of these may have been the difference it would be great to see some out there to clubs like ours.

Dave, that’s the whole point, they will be loaned out (for free!) so any Community organisation can use them. Not just to St Johns and the like either (they prob have there own). I would imagine that there will some restrictions (these are expensive items).

You guys have convinced me. going to push for our club to buy one.
did a st johns course a while back and learnt a bit about using one.
training to use one is probably a 2 minute exercise when you pick it up.
there fool proof. you pretty much if someone needs CPR just strap it on and the unit senses and assess what is needed and does it. tells you to get out of the way first. cant use on a healthy person as it senses a healthy heart beat and wont. probably wont work on a dead person either.

Just a suggestion ... maybe they can be subsidised for the larger clubs that want to buy their own?

These are intended to be used in an emergency in our work places but can be used by the community, as in lent out. Although the individual sites have differing opinons of what and when a community can use them (read: Some places don't want to give out their new toys).

As a Volly Fireman I have seen these in use ( and have used them) they are usually VERY simple to use and have Voice prompts to help with there use,the only thing with the ones that the fireservice carry is that the PADS have to be replaced after use( not sure on cost).
Have personally saved 3 lives with them

As you say minimal training required - in fact most are designed to be used by complete numptys - hence Hamilton City Council having them placed in most public places - certainly in the CBD.

Talking of Numptys. I am trying to convince the office Adolf’s that they can and should let go of their precious new toys for the greater good. Problem is, they are all afraid that if they lend them out they may get used.
