Recently picked up an '88 BJ70. Runs great, but after noticing a slight knock coming from the front right, I jacked it up to find a slightly loose wheel bearing. No worries. Pulled the free wheel etc, found the lock nut, and main nut where finger tight at best. Pulled it all, re packed with grease, and good to go! But here's my problem... The axle spins independantly of the diff/drive shaft! So 3 wheels on the ground, I would expect the drive shaft to turn when I turn the axle. So whats busted? I would have expected a whole bunch of nasty noises in there if something had blown. I was thinking that maybe the PO had pulled out the old BIRF, and just shafted me, but when I turn the drive shaft by hand, the axle turns, but it's more of a viscous coupling ie: I can stop the axle, but the drive shaft will keep turning.
Any thoughts?! I really I haven't overlooked something really obvious.
Thanks in advance
Chris

This is with the hubs locked. Sorry Birfield joint. The c.v in the knuckle.
I thought the locking hub might be poked, but a threaded a 12mm bolt into the actual drive shaft, and still nothing.

Have you fitted the freewheel endcap correctly, little metal tabs on the slideing clutch lined up with the larger master groved splines in the main body? If not ,the clutch won't enguage.

Re: Broken Birf?
Yeah, I thought it might have been the free wheel hub, but I physically turned the end of the drive shaft. Got a heap of degreaser and am going to pull it apart tonight. Biggest concern is that there is no obvious sign as to why I have no drive to the axle. There's no odd noises etc. Am worried the PO has had a breakage at some point and has just pulled the old one out, and stuck it all back together without the CV. Hope it ain't a major!

Re: Broken Birf?
once you've got both free wheeling hubs off you can soon see by turning the axles and driveshaft if theres a problem with the diff or cv's. If a CV's broken generally you'll know it without pulling everything down coz it gets pretty crunchy with all the broken bits and it usually affects the steering lock as well

Re: Broken Birf?
This is what has me concerned... There's no nasty noises at all. Changed the diff oil a week back, and no major chunks of steel etc so I'm really at a loss. Will report back tonight!

I know that the right freewheel is correct, but maybe the other side is installed incorrectly! Will check this first. Hadn'e really thought about it, as haven't touched the other side. F@rk I hope thats what it is!
Cheers guys
