maxxis crawlers how good are they

Post by terranonut »

Just wondering on the above tyres has anybody used them ? At the moment i have one very bald set of simex which need replacing.

Do they compare to the simex well in the mud ?

I don't know anything about the tyres, but I did happen to see these on TradeMe last night:
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Car-parts-accessories/Wheels-tyres/4x4/auction-71050065.htm

I don't even know if that's a good deal, because I haven't been looking at prices... just thought you may be interested.

Am running a set of 37" Creepies currently, and my previous vehicle was equipped with 35" Simex ET's; in my opinion, the Creepies are not as good in mud (in the vicinity of 15% less efficient), but are significantly better over many other surfaces - sand, river beds, pea-shingle, dry clay, snow, etc.

I've driven both and in my humble opinion stick with the Simex, they wear better and work better. They also have a more supply sidewall so hug the terrain better on lighter vehicles.

I've seen Simex ETs and Creepies on the same hill, Simex performed better. Creepies are designed primarily for rock crawling, although looking at them they might work pretty good in mud in a big horse power vehicle.

Leithfield,
What sized rim did you run the 37's on? Do you know what dia and width they measured on the rim when new? I assume the rim was beadlocked?

Are you thinking of runnin them GQTROL?
Roger who was over at OBC with us has the 37x14.5x15 on 10" Beadlocked rims, i measuerd them when they were new on the truck and they were 36.5" tall but measured just over 14" wide so wouldnt fit in the comp gauge.
I read somewhere on outerlimits the 37x12.5x16'x just fit through the 36.5x13.5 gauge

Running on 8" rims (37x12.5x16) - no beadlocks & nil problems @ 6PSI offroad on a Surf; inflation above 25PSI results in crowning. Haven't taken any measurements other than to note that they stand tall, provide a great footprint, and give excellent diff clearance. Mine have been on the vehicle for 12 months; 4wding most weekends (& week nights when I can slip away to shoot rabbits) ... trips to and through McKenzie Country , Cental Otago + West Coast, and tyres are only quarter worn (compared against brand new spare).

Yeah, we were thinking of running them as roadies and perhaps for summer comps (SuperWinch, NorWest etc). Pete Mahiloff at OBC (Green GQ MWB) was running the 37x12.5's on an 8" beadlocked rim and had to remove a bit before they would fit through the guage. He reckoned if they were on a 10" beadlocked rim they would be fine, but I want to be sure before we get a new set of rims. 8" rims tends to make them crown as others have said too.

I hear the Kumho KL71 Image is getting some good reviews. Anyone had experience with them?

Sorry to hi jack the thread, or not.

nope it's how you drive  and how many k's
I've had my 35 creepies for well over 2 yrs and still have 11mm tread in the middle, run a set of 35 BFG AT's off and on as well, the creepies have been a great tyre, they are stiff in the sidewall tho and I let mine down to around 4psi off road  never blown a bead running 8 inch rims, can tell you they aint the best in the mud, simex's are better in the mud....but only in the mud :!: we have so many non-mud places/trips etc, living in Canterbury I wouldn't buy Simex's. My father has them he has done less k's than me and his are more worn, and they dig like fourty bastards wherever he goes and thats not best.....except in mud 8)

 running a mud tyre on the road with less than 40psi in it over more than just a slow trip to the servy to pump them up:shock: thats just gonna chew the crap out of it !

when i have to run mud tyres on the road i pump them up hard so that they cant move and squirm which heats up the rubber making it sticky and chew off on the road. in my simex's ill crank 50psi into them when on road.

our humble 4x4 is not a race car and doesnt need to have the soft sticky tyres for high speed cornering or extreme braking and we dont drive them like that...mostly  i would run my tyres hard as shit on the road and drive accordingly keeping in mind that they may be a little more skittish under hard cornering and braking.

thats my 24.6c

Hey hosehustler how do you find the sidewalls cope in all the riverbeds down there, All my old 40 series cruisers I used to run 825 SAT's and they were indestructable in riverbeds but I'm running coopers on the current truck and its becoming a bit wasteful writing tyres off with slashed sidewalls :?

FFFEEEEWWWW,was starting to get worried, all these negative comments about the creepies.
Just about to put an order in for some and reading some of the feedback was giving me second thoughts(maybe 35"mtr's)keeping in mind I tramp to Whakatane from Hamilton every third weekend so onroad offroad(Matata straight)is imminant.

If I was to only get 3/4 wear at 22000km, I wouldnt be going near them!!
Anyone else got any feedback on them?

Trying to get some descent feet on for the Pureora run so wopass can have a break at being a tow truck!!! Ha ha.

Hey there NJ,cant be bothered changing the bastards, currently have 32"mtrs that drive off and onroad but keep getting hungup on the diffheads so thought go with 35"s.
To be honest dont reeeeaaally use the pig that often unless im just going to play in the shit,if I wanted to cruise off with a few chaps say down to National Park id just wanna jump in and drive with no anchor behind me.

Willhave to catchup with Dieselboy and try his feet!!

my 2c . get 2 sets of tyres, keep your 32"s for the road, buy some thing else for 4wding, go simex or silverstone, 35-10.5x15 . if you only use them offroad they will last ages. how long does it take to change 4 wheels? about 8 mins.

CREEPYS

Post by terranonut »

cheers for all the replays at the moment i have managed to track down a set of 35x11.5 simexs and since i'm normally in the mud will probably buy these.

Thanks for all the comments looks like if i move to an area with less mud and more rock etc would go for the creepys.

Yup, thats Pete's rig. It was only the spare that had to be worn down a little. The 4 on the truck had done a few hundred km's on the road so just fitted through the guage.
