powder can chip then rust, chrome plate can crack then rust also chroming changes the compossitiom of welds, and they can fail.

Re: Chroming or powder coating Rims????
both will strip off if you spin ya wheels in deep shingle. I reckon you can make it look just as good by scuffing them back and painting with a spray can. At least its cheap then to touch up when you strip it all off.
Never argue with an idiot, they drag you down to their level then beat you with experiance!
Re: Chroming or powder coating Rims????
I agree with Dave above. No need to outlay all the dosh on something that isn't going to last. Quick sand and paint them with a spray can, easy, cheap and effective. Also easy to patch up later one as well.
Ugly is a state of mind..... and the state of my truck!

4 rims to be blasted or stripped then powder coat costs $350-400, Personally I like the finish of a good paint job or powder coat, But as others have said spray can is cheap and easy to touch up.

Id go for 2pac paint. Looks grouse, is easily touched up and doesnt crack as easily as chroming or powdercoating
But if I could afford it Id beadlock em, chrome the rims and paint the outers some sick as colour, or vice versa

Powder coating is porris (spelling
) and will rust and lift off even if you dont scratch em
Paint em fella your only going to give them a hard time anyways.

Re: Chroming or powder coating Rims????
i get my rims zinc pacifated before i get them powder coated .That way if they chip (which they will) the zinc stops the rust from getting under the powder coating .I had my first set done 10 years ago and they are still sweet as

I thought powder coating was just paint electrically charged to make it stick bloody well so therefore would be just the same as paint topcoat, non porus ???
education please

there is different types of powder coating. Epoxy is non porous and will be much better than std powder.

Re: Chroming or powder coating Rims????
You could of brought my street legal beadlock rims Jase, a set of them for just $1100 pingas. they were cheap as chips at that price. And beadlocks would of been the way to go I would of thought. But those rims of mine new where $2000.
Ya gunna give the truck heaps yeah? Just do what the others suggest. Paint them yourself and save some coin. They'll only need touching up at some stage no matter which way you go. That's what we all do..

Re: Chroming or powder coating Rims????
Spend the coin on beadlocks not paint.
Get yourself some 15x 8 beadlock rims that can be road legal(15x10's are too wide down here) , and have them certed when you do the rest of the truck, I went without beadlocks for years...never again offroading popped beads in bad places (chasm was worst one, Subaru hill as well
) causes delaays and can result in major probs
They are well worth the extra cost...and yeah keep the paint job simple cos if you're going to wheel it hard the nice paint may last a couple of trips

Re: Chroming or powder coating Rims????
Blast the rims then paint them with por 15 that shit is amazing. Almost bullet proof paint. Can be painted on with a brush and when its dry theres no brush strokes dont have to primer them just slap it on and forget about it. I recommend it for anything really from offroaders to outdoor furnature. Just dont get it on your skin
Re: Chroming or powder coating Rims????
Old thread I know but just had 5 rims powder coated.
Powder coater suspended the rims with wire so when i got them back they had a couple of grooves with very sharp edges on the inside of each rim going down to none where the wire was not touching.
This would not have been a problem and they said that they have never had a problem doing them this way, however can't put tubes in them like that it the sharp edges would cut the tubes.
For now the tyre fitter has got heavy duty tape around the inside of the rims to protect the tubes, we shall see how long it lasts. As I destroy tubes i will sand and paint the insides of the rims.
Turned out a costly excersize to Reverse centres with 30mm offset, then have them dipped, then powder coated. The dip process was not needed but had been advised by the bloke that reversed my rims.
Considering the wheels are on-off a lot between road and off road wheels a spray can of paint would have been near enough for the off road rims, I don't really need them looking pristine.
Live and learn i guess.
