So the rear diff whines like hell, went shopping for one and was informed by a wrecker he may only have a front 1 so I wld have to swap the spyder gears myself as that is the only difference for the princely sum of 400 bucks.
That is rather steep in my books so was wondering if the vit front nugget is a straight swap into the SJ front and the only difference is the spline count f to r on the SJ spyders can you chuck a vit front into the SJ rear swapping the spyders - not getting worried bout the 3.9 to 4.8 ratio change?

You could... only to blow up the alloy casing the first time you drove it

So its the ally housing thats the shit spot on them? Thanks for the feedback I thought I was onto somthing there

that's a bit of an overstatement .

most people prefer to swap the vitara gears into a steel SJ houseing as it eliminates a possible weak piont in the alloy housing .but this requires a can spacer for ring gear.
the alloy diff housing would be fine as a cheap fix up .
all the vitara diffs I've seen destroyed smashed the mounts off the axle housing and left the diff intact.
have you had a rebuild for your diff priced up?
a rebuilt diff is better than 2nd hand I recon as you know what you have got

Second hand diffs for suzukis are a waste of time & money in my opinion. They aren't overy long lasting, so it's likely any second hand one you get will be on it's last legs. I went through 2 second hand ones in the space of a year before just rebuilding one. They both felt good when put in, pattern & backlash checked OK, but pinion bearings developed play after one or two trips each.
My diffs do get a lot of abuse though (6.5:1 transfer.....), if it was mainly a road truck you might have more luck with average diffs.

Thanks heaps for all the feedback, saves me going down roads travelled before. Have my eye on some WT F+R complete at a place I know... Its only my daily between sellin the d22 and buyin her a station wag, gettin her runabout as mine etc. Thinkin bout a 25mm body lift to help fit the 4ag an Wbox lurkin in the shed, can do lots myself as on the tools for a living, just generally a lazy cnt so enjoy the easy options

Just failed a WOF for a few reasons, anyone in Canty have some factory front leafs in a warrentable con, also working rear break drum "pistons" and possibly a drum and 1 self adjustor. Must be realistic price... can swap machining / turning / welding of all sorts as part trade, Just ask.

Slave cylinders for rear are about $30 each off the shelf, drums can be refaced just like discs can be skimmed but the self adjuster would need to be sourced for a wrecker.
What's happened to the self adjuster?? Is it to far gone to just clean it up and refit????

give buttler on stanmore road a call. Failed my wof on saturday for the same thing; i think the slave cylinder was $27 and then new rear shoes, all totalled about $70. I MIGHT have some leafs around still, just have to see if they're hiding away somewhere

Failed on breaks an susp, will split it into 2 posts so I dont acc select all/ delete as I did 30 min ago.... fkn laptops. Breaks, was told by the WOF man "there was nothing on the first pump and there was some on the 2nd and your rears arnt working, this tells me you need a new master cyl and new rear slaves". For a background I did the rear wheel bearings on the weekend prev and found the seals were bleeding diff fluid onto the shoes... seems like one drum has been replaced or skimmed / I havent measured it but was "non groved" as opposed to the opposite 1 that was fkd. I got a box of bits with Suzy when I brought her inc 2 sets of new shoes. Will pull the drums off again an put in new shoes and skim the drums, have a file somwhere with outside limits of drums so hopefully the are under, if not I may have to appeal to the good folks on here for a drum that needs a skim. The reason I am lookin for an adjustor is one of mine is tack welded in place, I can prob cut it free n regrove with a 1mm cutoff wheel but trial will tell. Yes I am a lazy cnt an shld have done this from the start, but I am what I am...

An the susp, 1 rear shock I can handle as I had it on the stands and cld hear it sucking air when I pushed it. Shackle bushes all round, the rear I can understand as one of the leafs are slapping around where the bush was. The front, I think the warrent man mixed up the front shackle bush for the steel bush that is supposed to be sung in the leaf eye, where as on mine the front leaf eyes are oval and the the steel sleeve is floopin round in it. Also my front leafs have kinks in them, the rears are flat / semi inverted.. If anyone can help it wld be great.

Are the coily sammys the same rear drum setup? All I can find at my usual wreckers here in Chch is 1 leaf sammy/ virtually a body and 1 coily seems like the drums an adjustors are still in it. I know they run 2 rear lines as opposed to one to the right and one from there to the left rear (WTF Suzuki??) my corolla of the same vintage had better breaks... an thats not much

The changes to the brakeline setup happened when the first widetracks/samurais came out. Lots easier to bleed
