1961 jeep

Post by 410 »

well i found this jeep forsale on trademe it was rusted out completly but the chassis was mint was told the engine and drivetrain was all a runner. brought it home and this is what happened

striped it down, body off chassis, cut all the rust out and welded in new steel. cut the floor out of a brand new hilux wellside and made it fit to use as the back floor of the jeep. fully chip sealed underneath the body and inside the body, painted the chassis/diffs/box/engine ect. paneled the body and painted the whole thing underneath inside everything matt green. all new oils in everything. seats are out of my other project but are a temp fix till i can find something more fitting with the army theme. got a wof and now its legal :)

got 15x10 with 33" tyre but are worn and looking for a good cheap set of 33s
original 2.2l f head engine
original 3speed gearbox 4x4/hi low
manual free wheeling hubs on the front
dana 44 diffs

yup reverse is where 1st should be and 1st gear has no syncro so cant downshift into 1st while the jeep is moving without it crunching like hell, is there a technique to this ?

and thanks alot guys done the same to a sj410 iswell nothing beats building something up from something that was a scrap heap. this jeep took me 6 months to get on the road, working on it slowly. will be a great hunting and 4x4 jeep for me and fun road trips.

im looking at getting thick rope to tie around the front bar, where can i get that from ?

There is, but I never mastered it.

Find some people that work on boats, only place I can think of where you could get some nice thick rope, they have to replace it regularly.

Double clutching on the down shift might be the solution here.

if its a 3 speed which it probably is then reverse and 1st will be in the correct places

and as churchill said learn how to double the clutch to change down with no syncro, its a good technique to learn so you can drive any vehicle back home if the clutch packs up on you

I've done it by putting it in first gear and crank the starter till she fires up and off you go.

Once you've mastered it you don't need to actually use the clutch at all, pop it out give it a rev and it will drop right in, easier on some boxes than others but if its got no sychro its probably designed to be shifted like that. At least that's my unqualified answer haha..truck driver, 18 forward gears, straight cut dog box, no synchros.
Awesome build by the way! Love to see the old gear getting brought back to how it should be.

^^speaks the truth, sometimes a tach will help if you shoot along the road at the same speed in 1st then 2nd,
take note of the rpm difference between the gears,
then blip that difference on your downshifts,
Resto job looks mint cheap rego too :D
problems are only a problem if you not willing to learn how to find solutions
