Yeehaa. My back door step. I'm in.
Mike this river really should be renamed "stony creek."
I drop into this river all the time, at night by myself, whenever I'm passing, seriously at this time of the year it is easy as, I drive the whole way in 2wd in my POS.
Everyone should be welcome
no snorkle? slick tyres? honda civic?
COME ON DOWN
at other times of the year it can be very easy to get stuck. Oh and upstream of marshmans is not for the faint hearted either.
but at the moment anyone wanting to will have to really try to get stuck. It does'nt take very long to drive either.

There is a lot in a name hence the confusion, Here are some answers:-
There are 2 Kowai Rivers in Canterbury and a Kowhai river in Kaikoura so it is confusing enough alright.
There is the Kowai River that runs from Mt Grey to the sea by Leithfield.
The other Kowai River runs into the Waimakariri River by Sheffield, and as Al has stated the Kowhai River is in Kaikoura by the Golf Course.
I assume you guys are going to the Kowai by Leithfield. Please just be aware that this area is getting sensitive with regard to 4WD use, so make sure that you stick to the river bed and the river boundaries, and on the beach avoid having a play in the sand dunes as this is an absolute No No, plus if you travel on the beach south, note that E-Can and the Waimakariri District council have changed the rules about vehicle access at the Ashley lagoon. Gates are now locked and keys are available to users at the council offices at Rangiora. Whitebaters are having issues here gaining access and there is an article in this mornings Press this access. Take care and have a great day
Personally I would love to join you but I will be up at Lake Sumner on another 4WD issue, plus hope to get some fishing in on opening day (Sunday 1st) would love to bag a big fat rainbow!
