Warn winch troubleshooting

Post by SASurf »

Ive got a XD9000 warn on the front of my surf and im having a couple of problems getting it to work properly.
I was trying to pull my mate out of a bog hole on the weekend but the winch stopped when the load came on. It works fine without load in and out.
The factory voltage gauge drops a little bit when winding in with no load but when the load comes on it drops down below half way and the winch stops.
The winch is on 1 6 month old NS70 battery directly on the terminals. Im not sure how the factory double battery system works on a surf but should i wire it across both batteries? Do i need bigger/better batteries? Could it be an earthing problem or something inside the winch motor?
Any help would be awsome
Cheers

Nothing to do with the alternator, an alternator at idle is supplying bugger all amps and the winch will pull 400amps. Winching is all about the battery and good clean connections (incl earth)

With an XD9000 the earth contacts in the motor itself can be dodgy too, my pick is wiring.
SWB V6 Paj with one or two mods ;)

I'd agree with earthing as the first thing to check. Also check the inside of your battery terminals, battery posts, connectors on the winch etc are all clean. Also make sure the battery clamps are on nice and tight.

As per above check all connections from the winch to the battery, how old is the battery?

It sounds like the winch isn't getting the amps it needs under load, have you got the winch earthed directly to the battery?

What cables are you running?

Is your battery holding its full Cranking Amps, it can be showing 12.7volts and still be stuffed

Over the weekend i cleaned the battery posts and terminals and the have big brass clamps on the posts to that i cleaned.
I had the motor earth onto the chassis just below the front body mount. I sanded the paint off before i bolted the earth cable on but there is rust behind it now but i wouldnt have thought that would have made much difference but what do i know
Im using the same cables that the mate i brought it from was using and ive seen i running before mint.
The both batteries are less than 12 months old.
It was sitting in his garage for a couple of years so could it be a problem internally?
Thanks for all your help

I think lack of power supply too. how about isolate the 2 systems so you know which way to look as someone did say that warn model can have internal wireing issues .
2 systems 1 being the winch motor its self and the other being the power supply to it.
can you get hold of some decent heavy jumper cables. feed power directly too the winch motor and see if it comes to life. if it dosnt its in the winch.
if it does work back wards thru the wireing till you get it to play up again. solenoid is a likly cause too. when a winch is grunting the voltmeter will drop well down. another test would be to hold the winch switch on with load and see if anything heats up. winch motor -solenoid-conections. actualy dont see feel, lol with caution. sad battery is a likly possibility too so if possible try another. also consider when you know you hve a good fully charged battery, dissconecting from the truck when testing with jumper leads so you dont have a truck electronics melt down if you connect things wrong.
