cleaning brake shoes

Post by skid »

has anyone cleaned brake shoes before

need a quick fix to pass a warrant in my 80 and get the handbrake working
the shoes are currently covered in oil and crap from leaky hub seal

full rebuild of rear end will happen when my repaired diff head goes back in, but in the meantime I just want a quick fix to get a handbrake

so has anyone cleaned brakes shoes and what did you use

cheers

SKID

I should also mention that I emptied a whole can of brake kleen on them last monday and it hardly did a thing, so looking for other option

I know of a joker that took these, soaked in brake fluid

and boiled them in a big pot of water for an hour or two and they're clean as a whistle and got through a COF on the brake rollers....... dunno how it'd work for diff oil, though.

If you have a gas torch, heating them works well

Heat with gas torch and wire brush oil that comes out, don't over heat and wear a face mask -----no not the mask you wear to your strange parties  ,

Skid, we use Wurth brake cleaner which works well but in the end changing to new shoes is your better option.

Give me a shout if you want to try out the soak and burn technique in the workshop.. I will bring the video camera with me and meet you down there :)

Dont let the missus catch you, but I have used the dishwasher...
Gets nice and hot and with a little dish washer detergent stuff really strips out the oil....
Havent used it on a brake part but should not get hot enought to damage the liner.
Have used it on engine parts... They come out sparklie and clean.....
Just remove most of the crud first.
Note: It is a common method to use boiling water to remove oils from alloy components rather than solvents.. Works great, item gets hot and when you remove it from the boiling water wash it drys itself....

hahahahahaha

if jerry offers you some used brake shoes, dont bother, coz when you get everything apart and go to get them out of the box, they have no linings, lol

plan b has been actioned, I burnt the oil out of the bastards, just waiting for them to cool down so I can stick them back in and swear at the stooopid things a bit more and lose some more skin off my knuckles and see how piss poor a handbrake I have after this effort
