Surface Rust Chassis Repair

Post by mmmm4444 »

Yes that dreaded time has come where my old truck has failed its warrant due to surface rust on the chassis

Well I’m thinking of having it painted as its been body lifted so access to the chassis is easier than a standard truck

Its only surface rust so I thought it would be worth repairing

Q. shall I get it professionally sandblasted and painted and does anyone know of a company around Auckland North Shore or shall I grind/brush it off myself and use some kind of rust resistant paint?

Thanks for your help in advance

Well I took my truck to a blasting place who would clean it up and put a paint finish that would never rust again but at a price...............well $1000 infact................my trucks not worth much more than that!

I think of a 2 day mission under the car but I have some questions.....

The paint you guys are mentioning POR15 how does it work? does it completely stop the rust coming back or does it just slow it down?

Cheers

$1000 seems a bit steep, ive been quoted $700 for chassis, diffs and springs and some other little stuff, id ring a few more places if i was you and ask for a cash price

Check out the POR website
http://www.permanentpaintedcoatings.co.nz/por15/
or even read the FAQ's
http://www.permanentpaintedcoatings.co. ... ons.aspx#2

If you take the time and follow the instructions and tips then it will last. Ensure all grease and dirt is removed before hand and use the Metal Ready and it will last. POR is sensitive to UV so best to put a top coat of say Chassis Black on afterwards.

Wear gloves otherwise its stays on your skin and won't clean off.

Only buy in small qunatities of what you need. Unless sealed properly the paint will go off and don't leave any on the rim of the tin. You will never get the lid off next time!
