Front Diff Swap

Post by dvk-kp »

Hey guys.

Pretty simple question really. Can i put a rear lsd Diff head in the front of my pajero? Have a crashed Swb Pajero with a good lsd and want to put it in the front of my new one as it has a factory locker in the back.

Cheers

Hi guys - this can be done if and only if you want to use a small rear lsd (8") from the series 1, and put it into the large low-pinion front (8"). The crown wheel and pinions are identical, and on my 8" rear I think I had a 28-spline, which is also what the 8" front runs.

I'm just going through this exercise now to get the ratio i want (4.875) and the size i want (8" so i can run a locker).

I'm assuming (that bad word) that as everything else from the rear and front 8" heads are the same, that the lsd center will fit too...

Here's some more info:

Yea there are ways to technically make one fit, that is one, just need to mix and match some bits and you loose the full time 4wd shifting on the fly option as you can't disengage the front diff

You can also use the original housing and track down a rear LSD from a turbo cordia car, pretty sure they are 8 inch and 28 spline.

Yeah NJV6 that will work, as well as an LSD from an L300 8", possibly an L200 as well but I've never pulled one of those apart. Hell maybe even a turbo Sigma or Lancer, but those LSDs are sparse and expensive...

I was talking all series one, wasnt sure what Pajero Cole had. I think it would make things a little more complicated with the high pinion 8" front in the Gen IIs, but knowing Mitsi it'd just be a matter of finding the right rear to pull the bits from :) What do you run in your NJ?

I guess another question for Cole though is why? Is it a road truck as well? Maybe an autolocker or an airlocker would be more beneficial. Certainly the air locker gives you complete control in each situation (especially combined with some fiddle brakes for non-locked moments), and the LSD may not be so practical in an IFS front given they tend to pick wheels up relatively easily compared to a beam front. Once the wheel is off the ground the LSD doesn't drive the on-side wheel too well.

What are you looking to achieve Cole?

I run an air locker, I don't believe a LSD in the front of a IFS vehicle would make an ounce of difference, in fact i think most LSD's unless modified are not worth the hassle of retrofitting but some are better than others of course.

A gen 1 low pinion front (housing) will bolt into a gen two paj, and then you put the rear 8 inch diff in and can use an air locker. That is how you get an air locker with 5.29 diffs.

The 5.29's were only in the 7.25 front diff but they were in the 8 inch rear on the earliest Pajero's, most likely the 2 litre turbo petrol and the 2.3 diesel.

Na, mine is a 3.5 so came with the 8 inch front anyway. But outside in the yard is a 2.3 one for a rainy day... its not on the plate what diffs it is and I haven't been bothered to check. Its a shortie though so may well not be the 5.285's.

cool lucky bugger! Is your 3.5's 8" front a low pinion or a high? is there much difference between the two?
