80 series inner axle seals and brass bush replacement.

Post by pruggerdore »

a mate got his inner axle seals replaced about 18 months ago and there leaking again so now I get to do the job properly, yay  :x
so my theory is that there must be enough wear in the brass bush that holds the cv and centers the axle too allow the axle too oscillate enouh to flog out the axle seal... correct???
so replace the brass sleeve/ bush ? price from Toyota is $225 each.
has anyone found a source from somewhere else ? BNT where Im getting everything else dont have a listing for them.
also planning on putting free wheel hubs on which would propably add to the proplem if I dont do the brass bushs. correct???

thanks Clive

yea been there seen the snr one but deciced it was the one from further in, in the housing that supports axle so presure isnt put on seal when fitting/removing axle.. tho just looking at pics it does appear to have the grease grooves that are in the hub bush

will investigate SNR further
thanks for your input

bnt charged me   12 for the seal at trade, feel ripped off now

hah that was for a hilux axle, 80 series probably a bigger seal, i think i paid $14 for the ones for my safari. On the lux i paid $25 and some odd cents for 2 inner axle seals, the pinion seal, and a pack of cv grease. Toyota quoted me $90 for the 3 seals!

havnt actually stripped down as far as seals as yet. harder to put it in backwards than the right way, but theres stupider things known to happen.
hoping someone that has had the 80series issue stops by. read somewhere on here that it's because the bush setup is the same as part time 4wd and used in fulltime it dosnt last forever which makes sense

the old man has had the same issue. last set of inner seals lasted but 5wks!. Has just had everything replaced but the bush so will see how it goes. He reckoned the last set were put in backwards so we'll see this time

Hi,
The expensive Toyota bushes are probably the ones that have the roller bearings in them, not just a brass bush. The bushes are the same as the Hilux ones, have got some trailgear ones for $25 each plus post.

Regarding seal leakage, check the axle seal surface for any grooves due to the full time 4WD, When I rebuilt my diff I fitted Speedi Sleeves on the axles, not cheap but cheaper than an axle. But before you do that check the condition of your splines as some people have found theirs quite worn.

Cheers
Tim
