Why would you want to put in 1 of those piles of crap (V6)?

A RZ is a much better option.

I'm most of the way through putting a 5VZ-FE V6 in my VZN130 (3VZ-E) Surf and it was a REALLY easy swap and the truck goes bloody well now. Way, way better motor.

But mine was easy because the 3VZ and 5VZ blocks are fundamentally identical, no idea about how compatible the bits that hang off the 3Y are.

I've been looking into this for ages, dreaming ideas really with no funds to do any of them :P
If you've got the coin, the new hilux 3RZ (2.7) seems to be a good option and mostly bolt/wire in. But expensive, and the old G52 box wont handle the extra power for long. The smaller 2RZ (2.4) mostly i think in a hiace is about as easy but not much cheaper but the driveline would probably handle that a lot better. Don't know how well the RZ series line up with the engine mounts tho.
The nearest bolt in is any of the G series 2litre 6 cylinders, apparently even line up with the mounts, at least the older ones. Lots of options there from the old single cam to the dohc twin turbo which again would kill the driveline (obviously :) ) Will bolt straight on with a manual bellhousing, engine mounts line up, only issue is clutch, starter, exhaust on opposite sides but not a major to swap those around.
Pretty much anything EFI is going to give you more power and better fuel economy than the dirty old carby Y series :) Even a 3Y-E if you could ever find one :P I've been looking for ages for 3Y-E parts to convert my 4Y to EFI, but hardly ever come up and usually so expensive I could chuck an old 1G-E for same money and have a 6cyl EFI (excluding cert cost tho)

Just my rants raves and ideas anyway :) You can do anything depending on budget

with the price and work of any conversion you would be better to sell your surf and get a truck thats got a better engine. you wil save heaps of $$ and time and with the saved money you can get more mods done
