stereo + 24v
Allright, got me new safari, the pervious muppet has hard wired the head unit to the battery, it won't turn off unless I pop the bonet and un hook it...
Whats the easiest way to hook the power supply up through the ignition and get a 12v source?
Will i need a 24 to 12 converter or is there a 12v in there somewhere?
Then ill start on the trailer plug..
cheers, Tom.

Hey Tom,
Im no auto electrician - but I got a 24 to 12v converter as I couldn't find any 12v wires to steal power from (Safari's run 24v accessories etc, unlike 80 series only 24v on startup) - worked great with the converter tho.
Good luck.

VDO make 24v radios they are almost the only brand of radio you find in construction equipment nowadays

Jay, where abouts did you plumb in the converter? (no auto sparky either)
can pick up one for about $30 on Trademe

Re: stereo + 24v
I plumbed the converter into the cigarette lighter feed wire (switched +)... and cause the cigarette lighter is already fused at the fuse box... and there was a nice big space behind it to fit the converter.
$30 is pretty good - i think mine was about 60 from Jaycar.

Re: stereo + 24v
This is my gripe with buying a 24v Saffa, They come in "up to 40amp" - my amp pulls over 100 amps alone.

someone should design and build 24V power amps so much more grunt than 12V ones

Re: stereo + 24v
I was trying to get a stereo to go in our new 5t truck. There is a 24-12v unit in there that is only 5amp and I think it is choking the head unit (it won't go). So this thread is very timely, and I will head into jaycar in the morning.
Gutted that they are the same price as the JVC head unit that is going in though

Ugly is a state of mind..... and the state of my truck!
Re: stereo + 24v
My old 70 series was 24volt. Ive got a 24volt amp here if some one wants to part with some cash and some good converters.
Re: stereo + 24v
get a volt meter out and test your wires that ran to the factory headunit a lot of safaris already have a separate circuit 4 the stereo already running at 12v

Re: stereo + 24v
the 12v feed in the safaris is only a small unit and woundn't handle the draw needed for a modern head unit. best bet is to get a 24-12volt reducer. if you are after some serious 12v grunt then your best bet is to fit a stand alone 12v system(12v alt and seperate bat).
I run my reducer straight from the bat. this supplys the main feed for stereo,my amp and a 12v cig plug. Can have stereo full noise and still run a spotlight from cig plug.
So i don't lose stereo memory i've wired the acc wire into the factory stereo loom.
hope this helps
