1KZ-TE Missing at idle

Post by Morange »

Hello all ive got a LN61 surf that i converted myself to 1kzte from a kzn130 surf its running the factory computer and injector pump but what it does when the engine is cold only when its cold, you start it up and idle, idles smooth for around 20seconds then starts missing, miss, smooth 2secs then miss again and when it misses chucks out a ploom of gray smoke

If you drive the vehicle it drives smooth as no missing at any revs or load, But if you stop at a intersection while the engine is still cold it will miss but only at idle. Its real confusing just wondering if anyone has had a similar issue or something?

Things ive done to remedy it :
Replaced at fuel lines and hose clamps (suspected it was sucking air)
Stripped and cleaned tank and flushed steel lines and new filter
Had the ECU rebuilt with new capacitors
Checked the fault codes no codes

Thank for any help and advice
Nick

Check the throttle body, and check the tiny butterfly there also. If EGR been removed then its easy to have the small butterfly shut instead of open. Causes rough idle and smoking having all the air blocked off...

I did remove the EGR when i put the engine in

So i wonder if you guys are right and the issue could be there, ill try find a vacuum diagram and make sure ive got the two VSV's piped up correctly

I do know the gasket that seals the aluminum pipe to the throttle body leaks, there's oily residue all around there

Even try just forcing the lil butterfly whilst its idling, then if idle perks up you'll know its that, or not. Should be easy using a pair of plyers or screwdriver etc. And if it makes no difference then you'll know its not that causing the issue, and be able to look elsewhere.
Just I've seen a 1kz-te in a hiace that got that problem after engine had been swapped. I found egr had been disconnected during motor swap, and the guy had stuffed up and ended up with the little butterfly choking the engine at idle. It drove all good tho, as big butterfly opened with the throttle, unchoking it.
Hope this helps,
Nath

My old surf ran exactly like that after it went for a swim and swallowed some water, i got the compression checked out and it was down a fair bit in one cylinder. I never checked anything else as i sold it not long after cheap so i guess that would be a good thing to test. This one goes on my 'watchlist' keen to know your outcome

Mine just started to do this , It was the injectors. Had new injector tips fitted and all is well. Apparently mine failed due to clogged fuel filter caused by the Bio Diesel , or so my mechanic says.
