Nathans d21 Terrano

Post by slide »

Thought I might start a build thread of what I've done, and what I do to my 1990 Terrano. I'll start with a couple picture of where I began.
I'm never intending this to be a hard out 4x4, more of a happy medium of onroad comfort/power and 4x4 ability. And its all a budget build :-)

Yea, I know what you mean. Ive had my terrano a few years now, and have really only recently starting modding it. I think by budget build I'm more meaning I'll be doing things as cheap as I can, Buy 2nd hand parts from other vehicles to upgrade mine, do as much work as I can myself.
Circumstances and plans do change tho, so we'll see how well I can keep to my low cost plans :D

Yea, I've recently read about that on these forums and the links to others. Seems such an obvious mod, but I'd never spotted or thought of the 2wd/4wd difference before....
I've been real lucky, I put greasenipples inplace of all the blanks and have kept all steering well greased. Got 1 tierod needing to be done soon (little bit play), and other than replacing lower balljoints havn't had any steering issues (yet!!).

Over the weekend I've removed inlet manifold and cleaned out gunk. Wasn't very thick as I'd seen in other peoples pic's. Probably as when I removed my EGR pipe (6 odd months ago) I'd found it that gunked up it wouldn't have worked in a long time. Also checked and adjusted tappets. Found a few a touch loose, so tightend them up. I found specs 0.35mm hot for the D21 td27-t, 0.25mm hot for R20 td27-t, So I did mine to a tight .35mm 8) .
Not so rattly cold now :D

Hate doing those intake manifolds :x
Spill off is the easy part.
Holding the boost tube on the studs sux. Got pissed with mine and threw it out in favour of a rubber tube that comes up from the pump at the front and is cable tied to the heater hoses
Good start.
Ready for more boost soon?

Yeah I not so lucky and ruined a good one today. I have my 2wd one on order now. Also going to the do the steering box mod as well. Good job on the inlet manifold. Now boost that sucker up.

Heh, and he used to give me grief about me breaking MY wagon... by the way, the new CV joints held up well!

Apparently he has in mind a system to uber strengthen the idler arms, will follow this with interest and report back...

Steering box mod? Whats the go there?
Yea, boost up will be soon. See the welded up pop-off valve on manifold? I've also cut mufflers out of exhaust and welded in a straight 2" pipe. That was a bit loud for my liking (or the neighbours  ), so welded in a 2" resonator. Free'r exhaust didn't up power much, but reduces EGT's- particulary on big hills loaded up. Next just wana install boost gauge then I'll tickle up boost :D

Generickiwi wrote:Apparently he has in mind a system to uber strengthen the idler arms, will follow this with interest and report back...

Be interesting so see any more ideas. Has anyone ever bent a pitmann arm? I know the balljoints go, and idler arms bend, but the pitmann never seems to. I was thinking, If a LHD steering box could be modified to sit in place of idler arm, then would have the strong arm, and a big housing. Would require sourcing one from the states, then probably cutting the main mechanism off to reduce size...
Bit to extreme for me for now, but may inspire someone out there...

Here you Slide. Im doing it on my thread
http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/Forums/ ... 40#p329540

Just chopping the box down to make it smaller. You don't actually need a lhd box you can use the rhd you just have to slot a hole. Easy

Its not about bending the idler its more the fact that the bushes wear out. not going to happen inside a power steer box its massive inside the shaft

I've lost most of my pics of snorkel install. I'll post up the ones I have when I figure out this photo posting/ sizing business from photobucket. My last ones turned out tiny....
I'd reccommend to anyone else fitting a snorkel to fork out the extra and get a new one with a template rather than try fit up without. I spent heaps of time making my own template and marking/double checking before drilling. Got holes pretty much spot-on tho so I'm pleased with the result. Really should get around to making new bracket for window washer bottle as now its just wedged in there....
Heres some to see if it works.
Hole drilled through inner and outer skins,

Been there done that ^^^^^^^ twice. Not fun when your triple reduction drive 240 volt drill bites and tries to break your wrist :(
Looks like the right place though.
Looks like it could do with a change of fuel filter (07/10)

Cheers,

Yea I was using el-budgo drill, still tried to bite tho....
Fuel filter been changed since then, was a while ago that I fitted snorkel :D
Just loading up pics for anyone else going to do it as a bit of a reference...
Still having trouble loading pics tho...
It seems to say "picture needs to be under 801pixels " or similar. But I try and make smaller and makes them tiny (like manifold pics earlier in thread).
Any suggestions anyone?
Im using photobucket if that makes much difference?

Hole drilled. Lost my pic of after I strengthened the panels by welding in a 'patch' to join the two back together (manual front hubs too, way better than auto for so many reasons :) );
Image
Finished. Flexi pipe moved washer bottle away from mounts. Should get around to securing it, but thats low priority;
Image
And to test with some urban 4x4'n :lol: (heavy flooding Richmond skatepark dec'11);

No issues with editing previous posts mate.

Have a look see at these pictures, might help you in relocating your washer bottle.

Bottle moved into the corner where the diesel filter was.

Here you see where I remounted the fuel filter, there is room for it with a little jiggling here n there. (top left of the picture)

I moved the washer bottle and fuel filter to aid in the fitting of the 2nd battery.

Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

Image
Had 1x tierod starting to get play before. Must been bit rough on it, been bit wandery on road since.
Checked to find 1 with play now got heaps, all other 3 all stuffed too.
Explains the wanderering...
got new (good) bits ordered now 8)

Parts acquiring :D
Image
Can see the step in retapped toe adjuster nut, and wall thickness difference compared to locknut.
Inner 4x4 joint greasable type, 2wd inner not :( .
But just cheapy joints for now. See how they last, can get good quality ones later if needed.
Just need another 2wd inner (only had 1 in stock), hope to get it tomorrow.
Anyone know what toe alignment terrano runs? I'm guessing couple mm toe-in?
Cheers,
Nath
