Beginner Stupid Question 33" Tyres

Hi All
I'm a newcomer to the wonderful world of 4wd, have a Surf 3L V6 and having a ball, I live in Queenstown area.
Now tell me, why are 33" tyres the shot compared to a standard 31", why does the extra 1" at the bottom make such a difference?
There's going to be a hundred more questions, so much to learn...thanks to all for a fantastic web site.

Its all about diff clearence, wont get a hung up on rocks and in rutts

Fantastic! A reply after 4 mins!.
So does that mean that I can replace my 31's with 33's with no rubbing/scraping/graunching issues? '94 Surf 3l V6 is the vehicle. Any downsides? How does that affect the overall gearing % wise ?

your gearing will be out, I would lift it before you fit the 33's, you mite get a bit of rubbing when flexing. you will have enough power. I dont know about stress on ya drive train though

I'm pretty sure with a 130 surf you need to do a 2" suspension and 2" body lift so you dont get any rubbing/scrapping at full articulation.

Gearing wise youll have faster crawl speed and your onroad revs will drop. Also youll need to get it certified for any rubber greater than 5% bigger than what was factory.

with a 2 inch suspension lift (bout $200 for rear springs and wind up the torsion bars in the front) you can get 32's on but watch the rubbing on the font sway bar at full lock (might need rims that stick out abit more and flares to cover the tyres) with a body lift also you will get on 33's or even 34's if you wanted but not advised (they have a weak front diff and will be really slow on standard diffs). as for on road.... i run 33's on my surf (3L V6 manual) and it is alot slower on the open road, they are an engine that revs well but has stuff all torque so any slight hill you will notice. i have just gone back to 31's for a week (m8 borrowed my 33's) and am loving having the power back. check your diff ratios (i think there is an article of specs down the right hand side of the home page) i have 4.3 ratio at the moment, my m8 have 4.5's and with 32's still goes ok on open road and i am looking at putting in 4.87's soon which should improve the performancs. as for offroad i would never look back from the 33's you get alot further than on 31's and power has never been a problem. however the surfs have a weak front diff, they break when you get the front wheels off the ground and they land spinning, the bigger the tyres the easier it is to do. after breaking one, whenever my front wheels lift if put in the cluch before they land.

they are a great truck that are easy to mod. have fun

Ive gt a 3l V6 1990 tho and i run 32s. ive had no prob wif them. there is a bit of work involed wif putts 33s on and u r only gaining half an inch clearance (12mm) so i wood say unless you want to go the whole way and do body lift etc gt sum 32s :) ull need to gt atleast a +19 offset rim (i think from memory) so they dnt rub and also mayb sum spacers for the front wheels if u hav the 4pot caliper breaks and mayb flares to keep it legal.
