Stole this from my build thread, but wasn't sure if id get many answers there so put it here.
Also took it for its first drive round the block and up the road.
Have no tps on car, but seemed to drive and shift fine,
i havnt manualized it yet. is it normal to drive normal without tps?
or am i somehow doing the tranny damage?!
Also, need to sort out my boost, egts sky rocketed up to 750 with my foot up it no hills nearby.
but then my boost just kept climbing too!
i saw 25psi at one point! didnt do that again,
so need to figure out why its so high. i have put a manual boost controller on,
but havnt adjsted it yet, and according to them,
its preset at a low boost setting. Hmmm.
put in a 71 degree thermostat aswell.
didnt get over 80degrees c the whole time, but want much of a test.
But shit it goes well!!!
just wanting peoples thoughts on the egts and boost. could be spiking i guess, as i didnt hold the pedal down to see if it held steady. but not sure. any ideas welcomed!

Re: 1KZ Manual pump, high temps higher boost
Is it intercooled?
high egt does suggest to much fuel.
but would be winding back the controller as high egt can because of to much air as well. once the turbo is passed its efficant boost range it just becomes a super good air heater.

750 Deg C is not uncommon, well on my two Toyota's it hasn't been. My 2.4 2LTE Surf would make 750 with my foot hard down in 5Th gear on flat road and my Prado 1KZ TE with factory inter-cooler will make even more heat . I have on two occasions now tried to find out from Toyota what the egt specifications are and both times have been told we will have to get back to you and yeah I am still waiting. I try to limit mine to 650 ---- with the odd spike.

Can't remember if you have done the intercooler...
It needs one if you are boosting that high......
Note I am running a top mount intercooler.
When I did mine, I dialed up a peak boost of 20 psi but can push it higher...
Tend to hold it at 20 for the long up hills... And it tops out at 600 -650C ish....
Remember I am pushing big 35 inch muds around...
If I keep the foot up it, all it does it get hotter.....Stands to reason....
When I played with the timing..
When it was aggresivly advanced it would fly like a cut cat and the temps were low.... like 500 ish but it was really noisy and I suspect too advanced...
The more I backed the timing, the slower it got (relatively) when given the welly...
But was smoother and quieter...However the EGTS rose up the more I retarded it..Then it got to a point where the power would drop out and the EGTs would drop off.....Too far retarded..
So it became a balance of a smooth engine V power....
I am still to confirm from an expert if I can really push the timing a bit more and not cause any damage.
I have to say it was only noisy on the coast / deceleration but under full welly it was smooth and quieter.... Felt awesome....
As for the auto and TPS...
Mine didnt like it .....
Would not get into top gear unless I was revving over 3000rpm....
I never tried pulling it altogether...
I would say its gone into a limp mode without a TPS as the ECU uses it to decide what throttle v gear relationship and when to chop down....etc etc etc...

What sort of boost controller did you get? one like these http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-par ... 532219.htm ?
If so, open the tee up, and remove the ball and spring.
I got one for my car and had very inconsistant boost. Would go from stock boost to free-boosting, or anywhere inbetween. I did some bench testing and found the ball made the boost bad

Removed ball and spring and bingo. Good as from then on

well, i decreased boost on controller, it was just set really high, opposite to what they said they come set from their factory. still need to get it perfect. but its sorted it mostly. no intercooler yet. will be getting water/meth injection soon.
and auto actually driving normal. as far as i can tell. not even flashing codes up at me?! wierd but whateva, my auto controller arrived in the post today so put that on soon to be safe.
also regards to EGT's, i havnt got my dump pipe on, as i need to modify further. so thinkn bout it, thatl be helping the temps get up there too...
So far timing has been done by ear. need to get a dial gauge thingy and also talk to kaiapoi bout what timing setting they recommend. oh and im pushing around 35inch creepys, with higher gearing, so that's not gunna be helping either.
Cheers for all the ideas guys.

hey i bought a decent quality one from over seas. after lowering boost adjustment and having a play, its being consistent. no spiking whatsoever.
Cheers.

There is no set figure, as I have had several conversations with them...
I tried the std 1KZT setting and it was too far advanced....
Just trial and error....
Yes the dump pipe will make a big difference..
Keep us posted on your progress...
