Yeah got the ideas of npora. None of the steering ideas are mine just following in other footsteps..
Kiwipete just buy a tap off ebay. they are cheap $10 dollars or so. Im not sure of the pitch I will find out when my tie rods turn up

Cool, which was the later one in that pic. The top one is like the one I just hacked up to make my idler arm. No issue on on the thread jack. go for it

What exactly does that adjuster screw do on the top? Mine has a little slop in the arm (ie. there is movement in the steering column before the arm moves when wheels are jacked off the ground), will that screw tighten it up a little?

I thought you wanted a little bit of slop otherwise all the road vibrations feed through the steering to your hands. I've seen similar "adjusters" on other trucks and they do help fine tune the lash in the steering box. Service manual will tell ya.

Your idler steering box is the smaller one (upper in my pic) I just picked up another big steering box today with the bigger tapered hole for drag link. Easy way to tell the difference is, look at the retaining nut on the pitman.

As Swamped says. Chances are it wont get rid of that play as it is most likely wear in the worm shaft. Nut adjuster only takes out the end float in the pitman shaft.

In. It pushes down on the top of the shaft. When it is jacked up, try and push up and down on the pitman shaft. If you can fell slight movement up and down (end float) then the adjuster may help. Lucky you about the bigger steering box. Yours is '94+, ay?

Yeah, the box i picked up today has big tapers and the one in the pic has small taper machined in the pitman. They were a bit random from the factory I will be mixing and matching tierod ends to suit the bastardized components fitted. Large tapers outer, small tapers inner to suit the draglink. Small inners are cheap aftermarket ones ($30 a piece) and large outers, OEM strong ones. This will make the inners the fuse point instead of bending both ends.

The gear teeth on the pitman shaft are tapered, so the more the adjuster is wound in the less backlash in these teeth and the less end float as a result. Once adjusting, check through its full range as it may be more worn in central position than full lock positions, possibly causing tight spots
Well I put my 2wd steering ontoday. Im not sure why the other guys say the steering felt really light with no feel. My one feels just the same except it now has no bump steer. It feels more soild and when you turn the wheel the tyres move at the same time. its awesome. The old steering was brand new and was in good condition still. Its one of the best mods you can do. I love it

PS, just hope the 2WD centrelink I have is in good nick, needs a good clean as its caked with grease and dirt, boots look ok tho. No grease nipples on the ball joints, wonder if I can tap them for some?

18x1.5 takes a little effort to cut the threads but hey its worth it. Got to love having a lathe at work. I didnt have a 16.5 mm drill so I had to use a boring tool.
Well here is the steering box modified and ready to go on this weekend. New bushes in the control arm and a suspension lift. Good wheel alignment and she is done on the suspension side.
I fitted the steering box today and the play in the steering is all gone. I have the other set of control arms ready to go in and the lift will go on next week as well. Wheel alignment and that bits all done.
Any questions. just ask away. Its what they should have done from the factory. Best thing is if you have an accident it all looks factory so its not going to be an issue

Hmm. Just had a thought... Your terrano is a '95 right? So that would have the larger tapers on TREs? (as sibainmud was saying about earlier) So you would need a centre link off a late model 2wd also? Assuming that the 2wds went to the large tapers also? Don't mean to throw a spanner in the works, but may be better to figure it all out now before you get truck all pulled apart... Ideas anyways, Nath

Good point Nath. May have to mix and match to suit. Pitman maybe an issue. Fairly sure you can get a large spline pitman with small tapers. i will have a measure up of some bits as I re-engineer mine during the week. It will end up a real bastardized set up and I'll document what parts go where to get the right replacement parts in the future.

If they have bigger tapers its not to much of a hassle. use the early 2wd tie rods that will fix that issue you have to tap its out so its all good. Take it in and get the tapers in the centre link reamed out. More work but not a massive amount

He's referring to the large taper holes in the pitman and idler arms. Idler easy, just swap to a earlier model idler arm but like I said the pitman could be a bit of a hassle.
