Which All-Terrain should I look at?

Post by crazydragon »

Am thinking of getting a set of All-Terrain for light off-roading. Possibly more of beach tyres and a little easy mud. My LandCruiser Prado KZJ78 came with road tyres when I bought it. Haven't really taken it offroad yet cause I was afraid that I might get stuck easily. (Considering no experience and road tyres)

Was looking for Bridgestone Desert Duelers and Savero AT but they don't sell those anymore. The next closest thing is BF Goodrich AT/KO but man do they cost a fortune..

So any other tyres I should look at? What tyres would you recommend? I want to look for a more aggressive tread but don't really want mud terrains. The ATs nowadays look more like road tyres to be honest..

I'm not sure what the more experienced guys have found, but I used to do some jobs in the Huntly coal mine and the tyres we had were the bridgestone dueler a/t 694. These performed ok for us in dust, coal or mud with regular road driving the rest of the time. If I had money I would be buying those as a compromise for general road use and some off road. I think we got 80 k on the work ute before they replaced any which seemed ok to me. At the moment I am considering going for a cheaper brand that were recommended to me by the local firestone dealer.

I have been running the Savero AT Plus on the Bighorn for 2 1/2 years as a road and GP tyre and found them fantastic, have also got a set on the new Safari, Before that I had the Bridgestone AT's and got rid of them after 2 months because of puntures on gravel roads

I've got a good set of A/T tyres for sale! They were awesome on the beach and gave that extra ground clearance as they are close to a 33'.

We just got some Kingstar Dynamic ATs for my Mum's Paj, for $229 each. They seem real chunky, haven't had a chance to try them offroad yet though :(

Bridgestone Desert Duellers - great wearing and still relatively capable. Owned two sets on two different trucks and they are a great compromise. Pid $185 per tyre at Tony's in 31" size.

pouw I am very very interested in a set of Desert Duelers but I seriously can't find any of it left. Not new ones anyway and TradeMe has a lot of worn/ uneven wear Desert Duelers. Where is this Tony's place are they selling $185 each new?

I'm running 33 maxxis 751's for the roadie and they are fine. Wearing well. Only complaint is they slide pretty easy under hard braking in the wet. Would probably be the same for any other wide 33 I'd guess though.

Yeah exactly why I'm surprised so many people said tyre shops still stock them. I pretty much gone through all the Bridgestone dealers and everyone of them said they don't stock it anymore. Bridgestone Australia still sell them though. Would be just better off ordering a set of bf Goodrich than ordering from Aussie. I wonder where did that guy get his silverstone from. I've never seen a silverstone store in nz before.

The new bridgestone 694s are awesome. Have some on the work ute and are the best ive had so far since a set of dunlops didnt last 7 thousand ks. And they are rated upto 50 psi.

why not look at the cheaper m/ts? The nankangs are a fantastic cheap mud tyre but are still a really good highway tyre. Prob be around the same price as an a/t as well

Would mud terrains be very noisy on road? I am only after light offloading like going on beaches and occasional small creek crossing. Not into the extreme mud stuff. And I read somewhere that says mud terrain can decrease your fuel efficiency greatly.

When I owned a TD27 Terrano, I actually measued the difference between Highway Tread and Mud Terrain Tread. Running mud tyres I actually got 100kms less per tank full of deisel. This was measured over 1500 kms of driving over my normal area of roads (Bay of Islands) for work
The tread is far more chucky, and your vechicle actually has to cut through a lot more air to move forward as oppose to an HT tyre which is far more aerodynamic

I found the same. I lost over 1 litre/100km (10%) simply by changing tyres. Cheap mud tyres are also generally horribly noisy on the road. For what you want stick to an A/T. I always get BFG all Terrains, they are dearer sure but I haven't got less than 90 000km out of a set yet (onto 4th set) and for the 1st half of their life, they are pretty darn good off road!
