Disco or r/rover?help please

This is my first post so please be gentel with me.she whom should be obayed has finaly given me the green light to build comp/winch truck.my budget is upto 10k,im an engineer so hope to most work myself.so do i start off with a mid 70's or mid 80's rangerover or a disco.next question is auto or manuel.thanks in advance

without wanting to get jumped on by the landrover guys $10k dosent go far when you want to build a comp/winch truck especially with the weaker drive train those things have, that blue bobbed rangie thats been on TM for a long time would probably be a better starting place at $8k with stronger F&R ARB diffs, howat custom axles and banded CV's amongst all the other stuff thats had $$$ poured into it to strengthen it up, would end up saving a lot of money in parts and bling :mrgreen:

I think you both have a point re the blue bobtail on tm.but there is nothing like building and setting some thing up your self.i hate working on shit that some one else has done that does not have the skill or budget to fix,or has boggied up.i also take your point that 10 k is not alot of money,but i no that most things go over budget.when we built our boat 5years ago if i close my eyes i can still hear my wife screaming at me how can you be 25k over budget on electronics alone.......
But im not looking to jump straight into the tuff truck class.disco or rangie is what i need to no?.....

yep I'm sure you know where I'm coming from

ARB's airlockers x 2 and compressor $4k-4.5K
Cromolly axles $1k-$2k?
Suspension and shocks $2k-$3k
Tyres $2k
Beadlocks $1k
Decent clutch to cope with big tyres and air lockers $1k
Winch $1k-$2k-$3k
Non chinese winch rope that dosent break $500-$1k
Certification $500
cage, barwork, body work, painting, race seats, harnesses, rear mount radiator, upgraded CV's, bigger brakes, fiddle brakes, bigger engine coz you always want a bigger engine, exhausts, etc etc ets $$$ :mrgreen: :mrgreen:

Since your two options are Disco and RR it seems you have pretty much made up your mind :mrgreen:

I'v never owned a RR but have pulled apart a 1996 Disco and mushed it into a series 2 over the last 3years.

I reckon:

Pro's for RR:
look better
less electrics

Pro's for Disco
Cheap and heaps around
Newer so probably less shagged
Post 1995 axles 24spline vs 12 spline in RR

Pro's for auto
Plenty of autos around so easier to source replacement
Easier on drive train
I've heard you can source a hydraulic pump for the back of the ZF auto as well but I'v never seen one. Great for winch setup if you could get your hands on one.


Pro's for Manual
I've heard the auto saps a bit of POWER
Its manual

If you want it to be road legal, I'd go for the RR since there is less electrics.

Offroad only probabably Disco and gut majority of electrics
