Transfer box breather??

Post by mbw »

Hi, I currently changing some very milky oil from my transfer box after a good day up the ashley river, but want to prevent it from happening again.

I want to extend the breather, I've done the diff's but not the transfer or gearbox.

Can this be done without dropping the box out, as the breather is in a prick of a spot and can only feel it not see it from underneath.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated. :D

Try unbolting the rear cross member ajd lowering just a little on a pair of jacks may be enough to gain access
Keep a vigalant eye on the motor and other componants from jambing up on the fire wall in the engine bay as you dont want to create damage on a second problem when trying to fix the first
Something to look at / think about is whether the existing breather is blocked as this will generate preasure when heating and vacuum when cooling and may well be draging water in through the output shaft seals
Just a thought

Hi

If it is anything like the BJ73 I had it is a 5 minute job from underneath. You wont be able to see well but the breather on mine was like the diff breathers just with out the rubber tube extension. I didn't have to unbolt any thing. I just used a screwdriver to pop the top off the breather and then pushed the same size tube as I used on the diff breathers and then clamped it down.

I think it is blocked, as it did start dripping out seal, same thing happened to my front diff, breather was blocked and it started to leak out pinion seal. sorted breather out, leak gone.

I'm sure it will be the same, it does feel like the same as factory diff ones.

I'll give it a go, cheers!

extending the breathers will help but its not a gurantee that water wont still get in if your doing lots of river work so you want to keep up the oil checking regime after you've had a good play in the water
